The statement was enough to take M’gann off guard. She had spent practically all her life wanting to be accepted and to belong somewhere. Shapeshifting was one of her abilities, turning into other people, different forms. She did it throughout her everyday life too, shapeshifting to fix herself into a hole. To make herself fit in where it was desired. It was easier that way, find a way to belong and make yourself fit that mold rather than push yourself into a space that you can’t fit.
“Are you sure about that?” M’gann asked Barbara quietly, afraid of speaking too loudly may somehow splinter and fracture this delicate moment. “I’m too alien to be a human. I’m too much of a white Martian to be a green Martian and vice versa. I don’t really know where in the future I’ll find belonging.”
