Deirdre hated Hollowford. She hated the neat little cottages, the gossiping elders and the jeering teenagers, but whenever May came home, she was forced to go with her. As always, May had told her to keep out of sight but, today, she didn’t feel like it. If anyone thought she was her cutesy counterpart, she could just tell them she was dressed up for an early Halloween party or something; or just not answer.

Ducking into the first coffee shop she could find, she made her order and browsed some of the cookies on sale while she waited. Despite her best efforts, she couldn’t help but feel like someone was watching her. Looking over her shoulder, she caught sight of someone she didn’t recognise from the list of people she actively avoided in this little village.

“Are you looking at me or these?” She gestured with her thumb to the selection of cakes.

Deirdre puffed air through her cheeks. "From what I've been able to find out, the Mirror Dimension - where I came from - has existed since the beginning of time, and the entities that live in it were made from fragments of the first light in the universe."

She scoffed, looking at her feet. "Sounds dumb, doesn't it? Like some fairytale bullshit. If I'm supposed to be made of light, why do I like the dark so much?"

A group of jeering teenagers had passed May on her way back to her family home in Hollowford, knocking the books out of her arms and letting out squawks of: 'Witch!' as they went. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she collected the volumes from a muddy puddle and sighed.

Hearing a voice, she whirled around and looked up with a fleeting smile. "I'm used to it," she confessed, with a short shrug. "I know it's not much of an excuse, but it's true."
