You guys think Perseus' kids snuck snakes into the palace to piss off their dad?
Please guys you must see my vision of penelope and her grandma gorgophone
My Perseus and Andromeda culture clash post got popular enough so I’m doing a ficlet of it!
Andromeda had…well she had a day, that much was certain.
There were plenty of chores to be done so Andromeda had decided to go into town with her servants. And despite being in town for just an hour or two, she had had four different people tell her to stay inside. To lighten that beautiful skin up, and then maybe she’d look like a proper woman.
Then there was that old man who asked why she was wearing a leopard skin and why she had no chaperone with her out in public.
And then to top it off, when Andromeda paid the merchant, she had meant to say “Efharisto” but it came out as “eh furry stew”. She wasn’t sure what was worse, the look the merchant had given her, or the two women at the other stall who had overheard her and snickered.
Andromeda felt like crawling into a hole and never coming out.
But unfortunately for her and her embarrassment, the palace had no holes that would hide her properly. It was no use anyway, Perseus was right there in the front courtyard by the palace steps, playing with little Gorgophone.
“C’mon, Bebáki, you can do it! Walk to Baba! Come here to Aabboo!” Perseus had his arms outstretched, as if that would magically compel Gorgophone to walk. But the little infant was content to just sit there in the dirt and grab at it with her little fingers.
Perseus looked lovingly exasperated, but his smile lit up even more when he noticed Andromache.
“Nagaa waaree booda onnee koo!” Perseus waved at Andromeda in greeting. His pronunciation was still just a tad bit stiff, but it was getting better.
Perseus scooped Gorgophone up in his arms, “Gorgo look! It’s mama!”
Andromeda smiled, despite herself. Gods, Gorgophone was such a sweet little creature when she smiled. That was one thing she clearly inherited from Perseus, his smile. Everything else about her looked Ethiopian but the smile? That was a Greek smile.
Oh gods, the very thought formed a pit in Andromeda’s stomach.
“Good afternoon, karda mou. Er, ahem, kardia mou.” Andromeda fought the urge to cringe at how wrong the words sounded in her mouth.
“….Gorgo really shouldn’t be out in the sun for this long. It’s a hot day, she’ll get darker.” Andromeda bowed her head so Perseus couldn’t see how much just saying those words hurt her, and quickly headed into the palace.
Perseus, however, looked absolutely dumbfounded. Get darker…? What on earth was Andromeda on about? What did it matter if Gorgophone got a little darker? Her dark skin was beautiful! As long as the sun didn’t burn her soft baby skin, it wouldn’t do her any harm.
So we know nothing about Gorgophone besides a) cool name, b) her grave and c) she is considered the first woman from Greek Mythology to marry twice, which was very controversial back then since women were expected to remain widows after their husbands died. But here's the thing: we also have a bunch of women in Greek Mythology who lived either around the same time or earlier than her, AND married twice too. Agave for example was initially married with Echion (who then becomes invisible and we no longer know anything about him), and then after murdering Pentheus she's exiled from Thebes and married King Lycotherses in Illyria, whom she later murdered. Furthermore, Antiope (mother of Amphion and Zethus) was also married twice: firstly with King Epopeus and then with King Phokos.
Which either means that Gorgophone remained a widow much earlier, or the new order that allowed women to marry more than once was adopted by Thebes soon after Argos (or both).
Sooo do you guys think Gorgophone was alive when Tyndareus and Icarius were exiled?
