It's the Simple Things...
Four weeks into my preparation for the GoRuck Challenge, and it's the simple things that are keeping me from really making it to that next level and ultimately reaching my fitness goals..
By simple things I mean processed sugar and diet soda. Every day I give them up only to give in, indulge, and then give them up again the next day.
But today I feel optimistic about tomorrow because a friend recommended an app that might just make a difference. It is called "Coach.me" (formerly known as "Lift").This app allows you to set goals and chart your progress each day - creating a series of small successes and allowing you to see your progress over time. When you create your goal you join a group of folks who are working on the same goal. This allows you to ask questions as well as give and get support. I'm kind of excited about it.
I've created three goals, no more processed sugar, no more soft drinks and be grateful.
Speaking of simple things that are really hard, try today's workout!
5 push-ups, 5 pull-ups, 5 dips at the beginning of every minute for 30 minutes.
Sounds so simple, but by the end you'll find that you have hardly any rest time between reps and you will have completed 150 reps of each exercise. Impressive!
Note: I had to modify the pull-ups. I alternated between jump-ups and reverse push-ups.
The 12 Days of Fitness Workout
So, my traininer got a little creative today and designed my workout to go with the 12 Days of Christmas song. It started by 1 dip, followed by 2 tractor tire deadlifts and 1 dip, followed by 3 shoulder presses (45 lb bar), 2 tractor tire deadlifts and 1 dip, followed by four pull ups, 3 shoulder presses, 2 tractor tire deadlifts and1 dip…… you get the idea.
It killed me. I no longer think this song is fun. Here’s what I calcualted I had done by the end of the workout..
Dips - 12
Tractor Tire deadlifts (stand in the tire and grip the rim) - 22
Shoulder presses (45 lb bar) - 30
Pull-ups (I can’t do these yet, so I jump up) - 36
Ball slams (20 lb ball) - 40
Sumo squat high raises - 42
Burpees with push up - 42
Lunges with 20 lb ball overhead - 40
Push ups with hand release - 36
Hanging reverse crunches (knees to elbows) - 30
Standing box jumps (I jumped onto the tractor tire) - 22
1,200 meter row
And, so begins week 3 of my preparation for the GoRuck challenge.
Day One!
Well, I've done something crazy - I've signed up for the GoRuck Challenge in Denver on May 1. This is something that is - well, way out of my comfort zone to say the least. You can check it out at GoRuck.com. I invite you to follow along with me as I train. Each day I'll post some thoughts as well as my daily workout routine. I welcome encouragement and suggestions.
Thoughts: Today I weighed in. I've avoided this for about two months because I was feeling like I had gained about 5 pounds. It was actually 8. Yikes - Oh well, it is the beginning of the journey, right? I weighed in at 135. I'd like to get my body fat checked as well because I know that is a better measure of where I'm at right now.
This was supposed to be my "off day." Kind of strange for the first official day of training, but I trained hard this weekend. However, when I looked at my calendar for the week I saw that I can't fit a workout in on Wednesday and Thursday's gonna be tough. So, when I got home I just went for it. I knew the sun was close to setting, and so I dressed in white and just went for a run. I took nothing with me but some tunes.. no Garmin and no fitbit, I didn't measure my distance or track my pace - I didn't monitor my heart-rate, I just went.
Morning Workout: 50 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, hip flexor stretches
Evening Workout: 45 minute run - some hills
Celebrations and Concerns: I'm proud of my spontaneous decision to just go run! Not my best run and not my worst. I ran when it felt good and walked some when I felt winded or when my legs hurt. I think endurance is something i need to work on!
