On the St Gotthard trail that closely follows the line and displays nice explanation panels about the history of the railroad, a family watches a helper returning to Erstfeld after pushing a heavy freight train over the north grade. The helper is taking the crossover so as to run on the usual left hand track (closest one to the photographer). In the background, behind the engine, you can see a stone building. This is an electric sub-station that transforms high voltage current into 15KV 16.2/3Hz and feeds the catenary.

Below are two versions of an image I made of a Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn narrow-gauge train engaging the Abt rack system on its steep ascent from Göschenen to Andermatt.
