Elevator
Your friends had decided that you needed to go out more and meet some new people. They dragged you out of your house to a fun summer rooftop party that they had heard about. When you step out of the elevator to the roof, you gasp in wonder. Fireflies float aimlessly in the air while the moon glows in the hot night. The red couches are arranged so everyone can talk easily with fairy lights twinkling above them. You look around at the never-ending magical oasis and smile. You feel so at home here.
As you stand gazing at the stars, your friends immediately get whisked away by some guys that they know. You don't mind though, you’re okay just enjoying the night. You continue to stand, your hair being ruffled by the playful night breeze. Suddenly you look up to see a handsome man looking your way. You feel flustered immediately, and you shoot him a bashful smile. “He’s so cute! Maybe I should talk to him... But I’ll probably embarrass myself”, you think. But you don’t have a choice, because the man starts walking towards you.
You self consciously swipe your hair out of your face and mentally prepare yourself. The guy finally stops in front of you. “The stars are beautiful, aren’t they,” he says with a cute little smile. “Yeah...They really are.” You sigh in wonder. You start to feel comfortable around him even though you had only shared a few words. He has a certain feeling about him that you like. A lot. “You’re very pretty, I really like your hair,” he says nervously. “Thanks!” You reply. “Oh my gosh! I can’t believe he said that!” You think to yourself. “I just need to keep the conversation going!” But just as you think that, the lights flicker once then turn off. “Oh no!” You both exclaim at once.
You look at him and he stares back at you. “It looks like this party is over. It’s a shame we didn’t get to talk longer,” He says with his eyes still searching yours. “Yeah. I’ll miss you,” you say unexpectedly. He raises his eyebrows and says, “Me...Me too.” After a bit of silence, he breaks eye contact and looks down shyly. “Let me take you home,” he says. You look at him. You want to go with him. But what about your friends? They need you. And what are you thinking?! You barely even know this guy! “Sorry, but my friends are…” You look around the roof. Only a few people remain, and your friends are nowhere to be seen. “Uhhh, never mind. Please take me home.”
He gives you a sweet smile and leads you to the elevator. He presses the button lightly. When it doesn't work, he jams on the button and rolls his eyes dramatically. You laugh at him and jam on the button too. The rusty elevator finally creaks open and the two of you get inside. “I hope this elevator doesn’t break,” you say nervously. “Don’t say that! You’ll make it come true!” He teases you playfully. “But if it were to break, I would be glad that I’m with you...Is it weird to say that?” He says to you. “No of course it isn-AH” You exclaim. The elevator rocks violently then stops moving. You both look at each other in surprise with your eyes wide open. “It did come true!” You say.
To be truthful, you were scared. You had never experienced something like this before. But he made you feel safe. Your brow furrows as you try to stay calm. The man takes your hands as if he can sense what you’re feeling. “It’s gonna be okay…umm...Actually I never got your name. I’m sorry. I know now's not the time for socializing.” “Its y/n.” You say. Oh wow, that’s pretty”, he says. “I’m Youngjae. Nice to meet you.” “Now’s not the time! We’re stuck in an elevator!” You say. Suddenly a voice comes on the intercom. “We’re trying to get the elevator working. It should be an hour.” You sigh inwardly. An hour? It was late and you had to get home! You had to tell your friends about Youngjae. And to be honest, you’re scared. Very scared. It must have shown on your face because the next thing you know, Youngjae’s hands are on yours and he’s calming you down. “Hey. We can get through this. It’s only gonna be an hour.” He says sweetly, looking into your eyes.
He sits you down on the floor. “Here, I’ll calm you down. Don’t worry.” Then he starts singing a beautiful melody. “I’m missing your face, missing your face, your eyes look at me, the lips that kissed me,” You look up at him in surprise, your glassy eyes blinking away tears from stress. You were speechless. His voice...was perfect. It carried so much emotion. As Youngjae sits down, he looks over at you to admire your face and courage. Even when you cry, you look beautiful. You rest your head on his lap, so tired from fear, and from the party, and from everything. He strokes your hair as you drift off into your own thoughts.
About an hour later, you wake up. The doors are still tightly jammed shut, the elevator isn’t going anywhere. You sigh. Your head is still on Youngjae’s lap. You lift it off and stand up. You don’t feel stress, Youngjae makes you feel okay. He stands up as well and faces you. “At least I had a good time with you at the party,” he says. “Yeah…” You trail off. “This is usually how a date ends,” You laugh. “Yeah but...there’s one thing missing,” Youngjae says. You look at him, confused. Then he slowly starts leaning in, slightly tilting his head. You smile and stand on your toes, you can feel his lips not far from yours. As you close the distance, you suddenly feel a woosh of air that blows your hair as the elevator opens and a team of firefighters stand in the doorway.
“The elevator is working!”
