The Promise Of A Better Place || Connie & Daryl
Starter for @gothamsbadge
As winter gave way to spring, the new world decided that it had had enough of Crawford. Connie would be lying if she said it wasn't a relief, no more hiding Javier from sight at all times, no more lying about Kelly's age, and no more pretending she was mute instead of deaf so she wouldn't get killed. Things had been tense for months and it was just a matter of time before it would blow up on everyone's face. Connie saw it coming, sneaked as many supplies as she could and hid them in a stash, and took her family as far away as possible the moment she managed to get a car that worked.
Weeks had passed since then, the canvas bag was still quite heavy since Connie made it a point to eat meat whenever they'd be able to hunt something and save the canned food for when they'd really need it.
A sicko appeared from behind a tree, stumbling towards them despite being too far to be able to smell them. Then another one behind it, both doing a beeline in their direction. Connie frowned, pulling her slingshot out and killing the first one before Kelly pressing against her side made her turn and realize that it wasn't just two sickos.
Connie watched as Kelly rocked and shushed Javier quickly. The baby's face was red from crying, mouth opening and closing with what Connie could tell where loud wails.
"I told you to tell me if he started crying!" Connie signed rapidly, taking Javier and holding him close to her chest, her other hand grabbed Kelly's and she took off, pulling her sister along.
By the time Connie considered they'd put enough distance between them and the undead, she could see the road ahead, just past the trees. Still trying to catch her breath, she and Kelly sat down on the ground, facing each other as a way to watch each other’s back while still being able to talk to each other, Kelly holding the canvas bag on her lap while Connie held Javier with his little head against her shoulder, letting him hold onto her shirt and rubbing circles on his back until his wails finally turned to sobs.
“We can’t keep running,“ Kelly signed. They were both exhausted, but what other choice did they have?
