Cinco De Mayo
Is often mistaken as the day of "Mexican Independence" This is partially true but the day is just the initial marking of Mexican independence. Here's the low-down on the battle....6,000 French troops under General Lorencez stormed Puebla in 1861. Mexican President Juarez got a rag tag team together of 2,000 men to fight against the French. The Mexicans won and it took them 6 long years with US help to defeat the French. The nationally recognized event "Grito de Dolores" is celebrated as the 'true' independence day on September 16.
In Mexico only the city of Puebla celebrates this anniversary of the Battle of Puebla every year on May 5. Usually there will be street festivals and military parades. In the US, Cinco de Mayo became a popular holiday through Chicano activists in the 1960's. Today, the occasion is celebrated with parades, Mexican food and fold dancing. And because of this....I don't know how Cinco de Mayo became Drinko de Mayo...

I'll go into depth with the last one. This head line is about the alleged rape of a 5-year old in India. India is already on the hot seat for it's derogatory culture towards women and these case just adds fuel to that fire. (If you didn't know already... the New Delhi gang-rape that happened in February left the woman dead and triggered the protests for stricter sexual assault laws and changes in attitudes towards women.) Authorities say that they even had to remove foreign objects (pieces of a candle stick and a small bottle) from the 5-year old's genitals. The Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called the act "shameful" and remarked that something needs to be changed from the root of this problem. The rage over women rights in India is still boiling and the ever-prevalent sexual assault cases aren't in favor of dismissing these protests just yet.
