Statement By Government

A car bomb has taken place in the Old City of Damascus at 7:02am. As of now, there are 31 fatalities, with 64 injured. In addition to this terrible act, the bombing caused a fire that an wild, leaving an approximate 343 dead and over 500 injured. Those who carried out this attack are as of yet, unknown. However, police action is being taken to establish a parameter and investigate, as well as emergency services being provided to the wounded. According to the Minister or Civilian Welfare, an unnamed amount shall be granted as compensation for those who lost both family and property in the fire and ensuing bomb. President Bashar-al Assad will be visiting the wounded and their families at the hospital in Qnawat

Libya has accused Sudan of flying weapons to "terrorist" groups on its territory and declared Khartoum's military attache persona non grata, a government statement said. The government said the plane had violated its airspace and made an unauthorised landing, describing this as "an attack on (Libya's) national sovereignty". It accused Sudan of interfering in Libyan affairs and "backing terrorist armed groups". The Italian government and national energy giant ENI will send seven fire-fighting planes to help combat an inferno raging at an oil depot on the outskirts of Tripoli, Libyan authorities said Tuesday. Italy will also send teams to help firefighters try to tackle the blaze, which was sparked during fighting Sunday night between Libyan militias and has been raging ever since, a government statement said. On Monday, the government appealed to several countries for help and Italy, as well as Greece, said aid would be contingent on a halt in the fighting. On Monday, a spokesman for the National Oil Company said the situation was "out of control", and the government urged residents living within a three kilometre radius of the fire to leave their homes. Armed groups in northern Mali were on the move Friday in violation of a truce ahead of peace talks next week, the government said, amid reports of renewed fighting. "Corroborating information details military gatherings and even advances by troops from armed groups in certain locations in the north," a government statement released by Mali's state-owned news agency said, without giving details. The truce was brokered after fighting in the northeastern desert town of Kidal between the army and militants, who have for decades laid claim to the Saharan desert territory they know as "Azawad". Afghan President Hamid Karzai signed a law aimed at curbing the financing of terrorist groups, a government statement said on Thursday, the second of two measures needed to save its banks from being put on an international blacklist. Together with the anti-money laundering law that was signed last week, the legislation will help persuade the international financial watchdog that the Afghan government is serious about combating financial crimes. Many banks have already stopped dealing with Afghanistan because of weak regulation, making it difficult for businesses to pay for imports or families to send money to children studying abroad. The international watchdog, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), warned Afghanistan in February that its banks would be blacklisted at its next meeting in June unless it showed a more serious commitment to clamping down on financial crime. Libya's government announced Thursday it was mobilising its security forces after acknowledging for the first time that "terrorist groups" were behind dozens of attacks against security services and Westerners. Three years after a revolution toppled long-time dictator Moamer Kadhafi and left the country awash with guns, near-daily attacks continue unchecked across Libya. An overnight government statement called on "the international community and in particular the United Nations to provide the necessary support to eradicate terrorism in Libyan cities". "The nation finds itself in a confrontation with terrorist groups, and it falls upon the government to mobilise its military and security forces to fight this scourge," said the statement, published on the government's website.
