Nine nights ago I went to watch the Wyoming Cowboys play basketball at DU down here in Denver. It’s my basketball team visiting Denver, meaning I get to the game in a 20 minute drive instead of two and a half hours.
I’ve long lost count of the number of times I’ve traveled to watch the UW men play basketball; San Diego, Las Vegas, Laramie, New Mexico, I’ve seen the men play in all those places, including hopping on a plane last year the morning after the MWC semi-final win to go watch the finals.
Yesterday, I traveled back to DU to watch the Cowgirls play basketball. I’ve caught the occasional game streaming before, but, sad to admit, yesterday was the first time I went to a Wyoming Women’s Basketball game.
For that, my most sincere apology. The product I witnessed was awesome, a beautiful team game played by some great athletes. Watching Marquelle Dent pass the ball is a nearly religious experience (which I already said on Twitter), and watching Jordan Kelley and Marta Gomez working the paint to snag rebounds was just awesome. Every member of the team moved to play help defense, worked on offense and defense, and I never witnessed a moment of egotistical slacking on the court.
It was simply awesome.
I feel like I’ve misused a great gift the University of has given me. I’m not sure if Wyoming fans understand it, but we’re so lucky to get to watch teams coached by Larry Shyatt and Joe Legerski, two men who fit the makeup of our great university, and have been with us for a while. They’ve molded a pair of basketball teams that are an absolute joy to watch, and I’m sorry that I haven’t watched Coach Legerski’s teams more often.
So Coach Joe, Marquelle, Marta, Jordan, Bailey, Liv, Natalie, Skyler, Tijana, Marleah, Daley, Riikka, Coreen, Hailey, and Rachel, I’ll be seeing you all play the game again soon. I’ll be in Fort Collins when you play the despicable Rams, and today I bought my tickets for every game of the tournament in Vegas.
I’m sorry I’ve been a bad fan...you all deserve so much better.
