EWAN MITCHELL for GQ Heroes
Spending time with one of the world's leading celebrity portrait photographers. In my job, I'm fortunate enough to cross paths with some of the world's leading artists, and to observe them doing what they do best. This was one of those moments - Watching photographer, Gavin Bond, work his magic with a fast-paced conveyor belt of subjects; and each time, somehow managing to capture something unique and beautiful. The way in which Gavin naturally disarms his subject, through sincerity, laughter and kindness, then takes that opportunity to utilise his acute knowledge of light, composition, camera settings and celluloid, was an absolute pleasure to, not only witness, but to document. Check out more of Gavin's work over at @gavinbondphotography PS - Gary - You'll be pleased to know that whilst writing this post, my girlfriend peered over my shoulder and casually announced, "Gary Lineker... Oh yeah... Silver fox... Gets better with age." Frames from my documentation of #GQHeroes for @BritishGQ Subjects (in order of appearance): @garylineker , Gareth Southgate, Gavin Bond Full film via link in bio... GQ Heroes saw GQ inviting an eclectic ensemble of artists, writers, athletes, activists, journalists, filmmakers and thinkers to London's iconic Union Chapel, to reflect on the trials and triumphs of one of humanity's most challenging years. From the Coronavirus pandemic to the burgeoning Black Lives Matter movement, the refugee crisis and society's mental health epidemic, this film documents the intimate thoughts, feelings, desires and hopes of some of the world's most enigmatic figures. This documentation aims to acknowledge the challenges of the year, whilst simultaneously celebrating the positive cultural leaps made by our ever-evolving society. A virtual interview with the Bohemian Rhapsody and No Time To Die star Rami Malek. During the interview, Rami touched upon the joy he finds when working with other actors, his process of building a relationship with a character and the pressures of working on some of the world's biggest franchises. I have to admit, that until this interview, I wasn't too familiar with Rami's work. But since then, I've been lucky enough to absorb more of his portfolio of performances and as a result, I've become a real fan! Rami's range, storytelling acumen and commitment to his craft is matched by few. He's a real inspiration and I can't wait to see how his career unfolds, throughout the decades, as he becomes one of the household names of the silver screen. A private performance from the soulful heart of @celeste There are thousands of beautiful experiences that I'm grateful to have been present for. Sometimes, when I'm working, it's easy to be consumed by a drive to document a scene fully; to provide myself with everything I could need in the edit, to make a scene work, or more simply, to make sure that the story is told, to the best of my ability. When you're caught up in that mindset, it's easy to take a moment for granted; to allow something beautiful to pass you by or come to the end of a shoot with a bizarre state of goal-fuelled amnesia. Unfortunately, this was one of those moments - Having the absolute privilege to be one of 5 or 6 people present, whilst an incredible talent empties her soul, using her breathtaking voice. Only now, do I look back at this moment and feel the utmost gratitude, to have been present for this, and to have documented it, for others to feel a small slice of what it meant to be there too. Thank you, @celeste, for allowing me to capture this.
