My take on Gwen and her relationships with her parents

As I said here in my Nate meta, it’s hinted that Sherri dated a lot and it affected the Runck sibs a lot growing up but in different ways. It’s shown that Gwen has more of a resentment towards Sherri about her not having a stable relationship.

In Lip Smackers:

Sherri I so do. I just feel like a brand-new woman. I can't wait to see what's on the horizon for me...

Gwen: Mom. Thanks for the ride, but could you go get your groove back somewhere else?

Sherri: Okay, okay. I'll go find myself at Contempo Casual.

While this can be read as a teenager wanting her mom to leave, idk…I feel like this kinda might hint to Gwen’s attitude about Sherri’s dating life. Also there's this moment in Kids In America:

Gwen: Can I have 20 bucks? I need to get something for Leia.

Fez: Oh, allow me. Oh yeah, I feel it. (strains, chuckles) Fifty it is.

Gwen: Thanks, new Dad. (chuckles)

Once again this is most likely me reading into things, but to me, it hints that Sherri has never had stable relationships and that clearly affected Gwen growing up.

And speaking of her dad, it's hinted that he isn’t around much probably due to work. Which I don’t blame him for, but it did affect Gwen growing up.

Nate: You wouldn't understand. You see your dad way more than I do.

Gwen: Yeah, but I still miss him. I only ever get to see him when he comes through town on his way to another city.

This is also why I can’t see Hyde as Gwen’s dad despite the parallels, because he would never want to have a strained relationship with his own kid.

I also believe this has affected Gwen's view on relationships. A big part of her outburst with Leia in Dirty Double Booker. She‘s scared of losing her, but unlike how Nate is clinging onto a forever love, Gwen pushes people away.

Gwen You knew how important this was to me, and you still blew me off for Jay. Just forget it.

Leia: Forget what?

Gwen: Everything. Go back to Chicago and leave me alone.

Gwen and Leia had a connection from day 1. They were always there for one another and love each other. Leia found her fascinating and understood her in a way no one else did. But when she finds out about Leia going with Jay, she closes off and masks her fear and hurt with anger.

Kitty: Oh, she's not back yet. She went on a picnic with Jay.

Gwen: She's with Jay? Can you believe this?

Gwen: Whatever. Tell Leia she can bite me.

Gwen is scared of Leia abandoning her since she doesn’t have that many people in her life that get her. Which does also tie into her school life but I can see her family life being tied into it.

She felt regret on her own part for leaving these people who had been kind to her, but they were caught up in great things, and she felt tired, so tired. She had had enough intrigue and danger to last generations, and it was time for more capable hands to pick up where she had left off.

Oh Karigan, if only you knew ... but seriously, I love the irony. There she is, the girl who went through a dangerous journey which in itself is an adventure even most Riders don't experience (the Wild Ride, Eletians, creatures from Blackveil etc). There she, the girl who wants to return home because the wide world isn't as easy a place to life as The Adventures of Gilan Wylloland suggests. She wants to go home because they are caught up in great things and she ... isn't, or doesn't want to be. And it's understandable, given that at the time she's only about 15-17 years old I guess?

But this isn't what fate has in mind for her. Of all of them, she's the one who ultimately will be caught up most in "great things". Perfect example of a reluctant hero.

Because that she is, even in-universe. I imagine in 1000 years (when the Mirror Sight future doesn't come true) people might sing songs and tell legends about her like they do about the First Rider. Maybe they'll call her the Great Rider.

Super awkward with the flirting. Likely to say something like “asshole.”

Strong woman over 40.

Thankfully, never been in an abusive relationship.

Would definitely not be a zombie-killing badass.

If Gwen had an "It's A Wonderful Life" episode, a worst-case scenario nightmare. Circa 2008.

-Gwen ends up exactly like her mother: gone two divorces (first with Cole and the second with Nikki), started going to a senior bowl alley to meet guys.

-Nikki ends up living life just like her parents wanted her too: no more music, no more dreams. She ends up being a local pharmacist like her mom, and ends up with Theo. But she's still yearning for Gwen and Nate.

-Jay and Leia break up on the rooftop. Leia still keeps in touch with Gwen, but Gwen can tell that she’s disappointed in her and her fate. Leia still keeps in touch with Gwen, but Gwen can tell that she’s disappointed in her and her fate. She’s sent back to Chicago and forced to go to private school.

-Jay goes back to being the "town slut" and becomes just like his dad, just like I said in my Nikki post. Even going as far to teach Nate the same tricks.

-Nate becomes a player just like Jay, and they both are each other’s wingman to "get hot action". He feels guilty each time he plays a girl, and then starts to think about Nikki and how she’d be disappointed in him. But then he swallows it back down and continues the cycle.

-Ozzie comes out to his mom but is disowned and kicked out. He tries to move in with his dad, but he disowns him as well. In the end, he moves in with the Runck’s.

My feelings on Gwen’s dynamic with each member of the gang.

Nikki: Otp of otps! My ‘90s J/H! I loved seeing them bond in Step By Step and their banter in The Rave was *chef’s kiss*. AND THE SCRUNCHIE MOMENT!! We all know that Gwen picked it up when no one was looking and continued to hang out with Nikki in secret 😏.

Leia: Cutie pies! Their dynamic is honestly the healthiest out of the new kids imo. And I love their parallels to E/D! I could say a lot more but I already gushed in my Leia post.

Ozzie (platonic): I do think they a fun dynamic duo thing going on and are very entertaining, but like I said with Leia, I need more scenes that don’t just consist of Ozzie sassing her.

Nate: I loved their sibling bond! Very realistic and well written. Even though they fought a lot, it was obvious they loved each other. They had my heart in Summer Storm.

Jay: They’re hilarious together. I love how Gwen just is not amused by Jay’s antics and is like “nope!” Very funny to see. I’d like to think she and Betsy are sick of Jay and Nate’s shit 😂.

I really do hope that the press starts paying better attention to Glenn (and Steven of course). There were some absolutely brilliant moments in 5b where I was completely awestruck by Steven’s performance. I think people are failing to notice him with the radical changes that Rick and Carol (especially) have gone through. I count myself among the number of those that haven’t paid him enough attention. Hiatus certainly gives me a chance to start remedying that.
