I padri d'Italia for the grab bag meme
I have had SO MANY FEELINGS while writing this!!! Truly having this be my next project is gonna make me finish SYA so quickly lol
If you’ve seen Il Padre d’Italia you can just slot Nicky in as Paolo, but this reads just fine with zero knowledge of the movie. (I hope?)
Being a single parent was hard- the hardest thing Nicolò had ever done. It went without saying that it was also rewarding and he wouldn’t trade it for the world -Nicolò loved his daughter more than he could possibly put into words- but sometimes he just needed a break.
That was how he found himself in a club, seemingly alone, having lost track of the coworkers who had convinced him to come out that night. Nicolò didn’t mind all that much though, he was tired and probably should have been taking the kid-free night to sleep uninterrupted by a three and a half year old crawling into bed with him due to a nightmare at 2am. Nicolò took out his phone to shoot off a text to his coworkers so they wouldn’t worry later once he disappeared back to his flat.
“Excuse me.” A sweet, heavily accented voice, stumbled over the Italian.
Nicolò looked up from his phone to see a young woman standing in front of him. She waited a moment like she expected him to say something, but Nicolò was tired so instead he stared at her unable to get his mind to form a sentence. She chuckled and leaned in close before speaking again.
“My friend wants to know if you’ll dance with him?” She said, misconjugating dance.
“English?” Nicolò guessed.
“Oh my gosh, yes. Thank you. I’m so sorry.” She said and she turned to point behind her, out onto the dance floor. “My friend wants to know if you’ll dance with him.”
Nicolò followed the line of her point and saw two tall men in the middle of the floor, one gave him a small wave and smile but he pointed to the man next to him. The man in question was hiding behind a blue cap that he had pulled halfway down his face as his friend gripped his shoulder tightly, preventing his obvious attempts at escape.
“I’m afraid I must say no.” Nicolò said with a small smile to the woman, “He does not look like he wishes to dance.”
“Of course if you don’t want to-” the woman stumbled through the sentence, “Don’t mistake- He’s just shy.”
Nicolò looked back at the men. The taller of the two said something to the one still hiding behind his cap and the cap lifted to reveal the man behind it. He had dark curly hair and a thick but well trimmed beard. He looked directly at Nicolò with big brown eyes and Nicolò felt the air vanish from his lungs.
Nicolò gaped at him for a moment before remembering who he was. He blinked a few times before shifting his eyes back to the woman standing next to him. She was smiling back at him, expectantly.
“Scusa,” Nicolò mumbled. The woman’s face dropped as he pushed past her and started for the exit.
i would like... to know... More about the plus one fic tbh 👀
YOU are in luck this one has REAL BITS WRITTEN IMAGINE:
The Notes:
General Tweakings, Ideas:
Nicky is recently dumped and grouchy about it. Andy and Quynh decided to drag him along to the wedding as a plus-one to get him out of the house.
Booker is attending his ex-wife’s wedding, with Joe as his moral support.
Nicky and Joe meet at the wedding, and then later find out they’re forced to work together on a project (they’re both ph’d students)
PINING. LOVE AND ADORATION. HURT COMFORT.
…Is this a rom-com but in fanfic form?
OH GOD IT IS.
Not my zone halp me what does one do with this kind of thing oh dear.
(I don’t make intelligent notes ok)
-----
Excerpt:
“Absolutely not.”
“Oh, come on, it’ll be fun. You haven’t been out of the house in weeks, you could use something cheery and fun to do.”
“I truly cannot think of something less appealing than someone else’s happy wedding.” Nicky scowls, “Besides, isn’t Quynh sort of your plus one by default?”
“Yes, that’s why we’re both taking you along. The invite’s pretty flexible, since they estimated a smallish affair, but have extra venue space. Just a paid bar.”
“Thank you, but you see-I already have a date. A date with Descartes.”
“Your elective and his fireplace bullshit ramblings are not a date.”
---
Okay so there isn’t MUCH written but HEY.
And as for Descartes that’s entirely me projecting but I like to think Nicky would be just as salty about that mans stuff as I am/was.
WIP Grab Bag Meme
Rules: Below are the names of all the files in my WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Send me an ask with the title that most interests you and I’ll post a little snippet of it or tell you something about it!
Doing this again, WIP titles below the cut!
For clarity I've added fandoms beside each title.
(coffeebeannate) I say my rosary to him and no one else, grab bag meme
Anyone wanna guess what that title is in reference to?? (TW: Blood and Gore)
Nicolò finished off the man with a harsh slice of his sword across the gut. The nameless soldier gripped his stomach as guts and viscera poured forth from his opened belly. He sank to his knees before falling forward face first into the dirt.
Nicolò looked about himself, half expecting to have more people to fight- to kill. He knew he wouldn’t find anyone else, his mind was too attuned to the flow of battle to easily lose track of how many enemies remained. Still, he spun around, ready to attack if need be.
As expected he only saw his family. Quynh, whose shortsword was still dripping with blood, was kneeling over Andromache, who had just gasped back to life. Yusuf was on the opposite end of the road, near the entrance to the church.
Nicolò made his way toward the man he loved. He was almost there when Yusuf noticed him and kicked something away from the corpse at his feet.
“What was that?”
“Nothing,” Yusuf said. He winced when Nicolò stared back at him, “A rosary, I didn’t want to upset you.”
Mission Fic for the grab bag meme!
This is the very first thing I wrote for ToG I’ve written like 4 chapters I think... still haven’t published it though lol
The flight was a quick one, less than two hours. The two men hardly spoke for the duration, content to sit on the floor of the small cargo plane, Nicoló absentmindedly tracing circles on Yusuf’s thigh with his thumb.
Yusuf didn’t even realize he had fallen asleep until the pilot called back to them that they would be landing soon.
He stirred slightly, not wanting to stop the rhythm of Nicoló’s gentle hand.
“Did you enjoy your morning nap? Must have had a late night, amore mio,” Nicoló said. His voice was level, but the innuendo was still there.
Yusuf opened one eye and glanced at Nicoló. He had a book propped open in his lap, holding it in place with his free hand. He turned the page and continued reading it as if he wasn’t also thinking about the night they had spent together.
Yusuf pushed himself to sit upright from the awkward position he had fallen asleep in, stretching the stiffness out of his neck.
“Late though it may have been, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” Yusuf couldn’t help the sincerity bleeding into his voice.
Joe x Nicky Angst for the grab bag meme? thank you :)
Welp, with this one I’ve literally posted something from all of my unpublished WIPs lol Seriously thanks for the interest! I’m sure I’ll post them all in full AT SOME POINT.
Anyway here’s some Nicky being kind of--- what shall we call it? Scared and dealing with it poorly? sooooo be prepared for that lol
“I can’t look at her anymore.” Nicolò said quietly.
“What?” Joe had been having trouble following the conversation up to that point, but now he was completely sure he and Nicolò were talking about two different things.
“Andromache looks at us and I see her break all over again.” Nicolò said. He took a deep breath before continuing, “It’s not fair.”
Yusuf sighed and reached out for Nicolò’s hand but was stunned when he removed his and turned away.
“What are you saying?” Yusuf asked. He was actually starting to worry.
“I don’t know,” Nicolò stood up from their shared bedroll and walked to the other side of the fire.
Normally Yusuf would have followed him, but Nicolò was radiating anger and confusion, and Yusuf was positive any attempt at calming him would only make things worse.
“Do you ever think about destiny?” Nicolò asked after so long that Yusuf had almost drifted back to sleep.
“That’s usually your job isn’t it, my heart?” Yusuf said, trying not to let his voice betray how worried he felt at Nicolò not being by his side.
Nicolò made a noise that was somewhere between a laugh and a groan, but Yusuf was sure he was crying.
“Nico?” Yusuf whispered. Everything in him wanted to run to Nicolò and wrap him up in his arms.
“Do you think we tempt fate?” Nicolò finally asked.
“I don’t understand.”
“Do you think we’re setting ourselves up to be broken the way losing Quynh has broken Andromache?”
“I don’t think she would take kindly to you calling her broken.”
“She is though.” Nicolò laughed, but it was hollow, “That’s not our Andromache, it’s been nearly a decade Yusuf.”
“We’ll find Quynh.”
“Will we?” Nicolò practically shouted.
“What are you suggesting? That we give up? Leave Quynh to her fate?”
“No. I’m not suggesting that we give up on Quynh.”
Yusuf heard Nicolò sit down, though he couldn't see him beyond the bright light of the fire.
Yusuf was no longer just worried. He hadn’t heard Nicolò talk like this since before they had first come together, since before they had found Quynh and Andromache. No, Yusuf was no longer worried, he was terrified. He took a deep breath and asked the question he already knew the answer to.
“Us? You want to give up on us?”
“Don’t say it like that.”
“That’s what you mean though, isn’t it?” Terror gave way to anger, even though Yusuf knew somewhere in the back of his mind that the anger was only a way to try and protect himself.
Nicolò didn’t speak for a long time after that. All the while Yusuf let his anger burn brighter, it was easier than feeling his heart crumbling in his chest with each moment that Nicolò didn’t say that he wasn’t planning on leaving him.
