Do you remember @grabelsky’s ‘Hello Kitty’ that we featured on our cover for issue 28 in March 2020? Good news: “Mom had a litter!” Matthew shares about the new piece: “My friends Max and Amanda came back over to my studio with their daughter Mari in January, just about a year after Amanda and Mari posed for the first one. By then, Mari was a toddler and alternated between crawling around on her mom’s lap while her dad attempted to direct her, and running around my studio. If you look at the window on the right, you can see the reflection of a little girl who one of the kitties is staring at. That girl is Mari at the age when she posed for me the first time, together with her parents. The reflection on the left is a self-portrait of me coming up with the idea for this painting. Surreal Paintings by Matthew Grabelsky Take the New York City Subway for a Wild Ride

In a recent interview with Thinkspace Project‘s blog Sour Harvest, Grabelsky shared that his characters will soon leave the subway, but added that he wants the shift to be organic. “My concept is that these characters started on the subway and then go out into the wider world. I certainly want to do paintings set in different locations in New York. I was born and am currently living in Los Angeles and so I expect that my characters will make it out to LA at some point.”

Jones Beach, 2017,  Matthew Grabelsky  de la série New York City Subway. 

Cette oeuvre est :

- une peinture et non une photo. On note donc la technique de la représentation figurative de l’artiste,

- un humain avec une tête d’oiseau. Original !,

- un contraste entre le sujet et son traitement : la banalité de la scène (une personne assise dans une rame de métro et le protagoniste qui est une hybridation mi homme mi animal,

- l’intention :  faire percevoir la part d’inconscient de chacun, voir d’originalité, pourquoi pas de fantastique. Des êtres hybrides conformes à leur environnement mais cultivant leur propre univers intérieur, faisant écho à un “continuum culturel beaucoup plus vaste”,

- Les références : les histoires de la mythologie grecque,

- Courant artistique : surréalisme, figuratif.
