"Beach Sunset" by Grace Fong on INPRNT
Artist Spotlight # 2 of our month long campaign! Today’s featured artist is the awesome Grace Fong (fictograph)! Grace works in tech for the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, CA, but on the side, she illustrates and does concept art. She loves fantasy stories (both reading and writing them!), traveling, and animals.
Grace is also running a Ladies of Lit sister project “DRAW ‘EM WITH THE POINTY END: A Game of Thrones Art Book!” Spread the love!
Ladies of Literature: Volume 2 Character: Genya Safin from Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Favorite childhood book: “First Test from the Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce as well as the Animorphs series were my biggest artistic influences!”
Favorite work song: “Undoubtedly ’Iron’ by Woodkid then probably followed by ’Seven Devils’ by Florence and the Machine or ‘Bottom of the River‘ by Delta Rae.“
Fictional character you feel on a spiritual level: “I think it's a tie between Vin from Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn and Sabriel from Garth Nix's Old Kingdom books. They're both totally badass, super intelligent, ladies!”
What are you working on right now: “Too many things! Finishing a personal art book, kickstarting a group art book, a mini-comic for class, designing a video game, and outlining a novel (...and on top of it, I have two classes and a full-time job).”
To see Grace’s full piece in all its glory, back LADIES OF LITERATURE: VOLUME 2 Kickstarter (http://kck.st/1AQ6cuq)!

Floss with flavor - is it on your resolution list?
We're not necessarily recommending Cupcake or Bacon flavored floss (but they are really available on the world wide web), but we would like you to know that flossing is important to good oral and overall health. Chances are good you'll find mint, bubblegum or unflavored in our office - although cupcake does have some appeal!
Brushing without flossing is comparable to cleaning only 65% of your body leaving the 35% dirty which simply means you are not completely clean.
Flossing removes the tiny trapped food particles and also the plaque trapped between the teeth which a tooth brush cannot reach. This means healthier gums, fewer cavities, and a fresher smile.
Five components of the dental exam
Dental exams are critical to optimal care. Dr. Fong prides herself on completing a thorough examination at each visit. The exam is made up of a number of procedures:
· The head and neck exam
· The radiographic (x-ray) exam
· The periodontal (gum) exam
· The hard tissue/tooth exam (check for cavities)
· The orthodontic exam
The head and neck exam looks at both the head and neck for any abnormalities in the skin, muscles and/or glands. We feel along your jaw and neck both inside and outside your mouth looking for lumps, bumps, swellings, discolorations, sores or tenderness. Any deviations from 'normal' will be noted and followed up on. Swollen glands for instance are generally associated with a recent sore throat. A sore may be the result of a recent hot food burn or crusty food irritation, or perhaps a check biting habit. It is abnormalities of 'unknown cause' that we will follow-up on. This may simply be a call to see if it's still there (having shown you in the mirror and discussing previously), or a quick follow-up visit to ensure it is resolving. All of this is part of our oral cancer screen.
The radiographs/x-rays will show us what's happening with the bone, under the gums as well as showing us what's happening with the teeth. At Zen Dental Care, we use digital radiographs that expose you to the least amount of radiation possible, 90% less than traditional radiographs. We can see bone loss related to periodontal disease and tooth support and ridge resorption related to missing teeth. Radiographs (or x-rays as they are often called) also show cavities between the teeth, abscesses/infection with the nerves of the teeth, impacted, malpositioned or fused teeth. Typically we would take a number of 'small film' radiographs, often referred to as 'bitewings' or 'periapicals' every year or so depending on the current condition of your mouth and your home care. The large panoramic radiograph, or PAN, that we periodically take will show whether or not you have wisdom teeth and how they are positioned. We can use this radiograph to look for any cysts in the jaw bone, examine the joints as well as the sinuses. This type of screening x-ray is often used to see if teeth are missing, and to assess the need for future orthodontics or early orthodontic interception. This type of radiograph we would take every four or five years, or any time you have had an impact injury (to check for fractures of the jaw) or if you/we are planning for wisdom tooth extractions or orthodontics.
The third part of the examination involves an examination of the gums, and supporting structures around the teeth – the periodontal exam. It involves measuring the spaces around the teeth, probing-checking for bone loss, gum recession, attachment loss and presence or absence of bleeding or exudate(pus/infection). We will chart this information in the computer and compare it from visit to visit. If you like we can even provide you with a copy. We will also assess the quantity and quality of your saliva. This can play an important role in your ability to swallow, and your frequency of developing cavities. Dry mouth and other oral conditions are greatly influenced by your medial history and current medications so we will also be updating this at each visit as part of your health history update.
Next, Dr. Fong also check each tooth for areas of weakness (decalcification), cavities, wear, root exposure, vitality and mobility. This is referred to as the hard tissue exam. Once we have collected all of this data we can do a complete assessment, discuss our findings and best decide your hygiene interval as well as establish a treatment plan for any necessary treatment. Dr. Fong will also examine your occlusion, how the teeth fit together and function during open and close. By examining the joint and related muscles we can detect chewing/occlusal problems that, if left untreated can lead jaw soreness, tooth pain, even migraines. As I'm sure you're aware from ads on television, and your discussions with our hygienist, your oral condition is closely tied to your over all health. Want to know more, watch for our next post.
