A big part of what I love about Grace's role in FR is that she is often selfish and she does keep missing the mark on what Team Hunt stands for, and even when she gets the idea she's not always much good at putting it into practice. She's a natural at many of the relevant skills, but at the ideology? Not so much! And I could go into the whys and hows of why I think she's Like That, but that's for another post.
My point here is that, in a story arc that deliberately points the spotlight at the audience and says 'you too can and should be part of the fight for a better world,' Grace demonstrates that fighting for the good of others isn't about inborn qualities that suit you for the role. It's about the choice to participate, and more than that, it's about the practice of growth and learning how to contribute well, even when you fuck it, even when it doesn't come naturally. And even while you're fumbling in the dark, your contribution still counts—might in fact be essential.
The degree of skill and selflessness and resilience of the MI characters is in many ways a fantasy; exaggerated for entertainment and effect. So when pointing at the audience to say, 'you should do that too,' it means something add that you don't have to achieve the ideal. You just have to aim for it. And when you miss, aim again.
yuri wins i expected them to have 5 fics
I loved Ilsa in Dead Reckoning Part One. I've always loved her character but her arc in this movie makes me feel Emotions.
for the entire series since we were introduced to her, we've always seen her wanting out of the game. she tries to run, tries to cut out that part of her life, and she always fails, pulled back for a reason or another.
she was always looking out for herself, going it alone, and only teaming up with Team Hunt when their goals align. but she's grown from that. we see her willingly joining the team this time, instead of doing her own thing until she's forced to confront them. we see her interacting with the team, with Ethan, beyond what's needed for the mission at hand.
we see her make a conscious choice to go save a woman she didn't know at the risk of her own life, a decision she never would've made when we met her in Rogue Nation.
and it's only her compassion and decision in this moment that finally turned Grace around. Grace joined Team Hunt bc she felt indebted to Ilsa, bc she realized that instead of running away, like she expected her to, like she herself was trying so desperately to do, Ilsa came back. for her.
she doesn't know how to feel about that, but she does know she'll do her best to help the friends of the woman who saved her life.
just!!! it's so well-written, and aches in a good way, the same way Oblivion makes me ache. an ending that's the culmination of her character, an essential part of the story, and a self sacrifice that shows her growth. I'm sad about it but at the same time I love it so much. what a way to go.
random m:i thought.
paris and grace don't have surnames, and i am sure those are not their real names either. and it makes me think about the premise of the imf - we live and die in the shadows for those who we know (ethan, benji, luther, etc. all those who have a true identity or belong to any "actual" agency) and those we never meet (grace and paris)
there are people who will be the face of good things, but behind them there are unknown ones who are part of the process too. they are needed for good things to happen, even when their names are not known.
and i find that beautiful, because grace and paris may not have a great development in the past-present-future way, but they show us how they want to do good in spite of adversity.
the more i think about the franchise and the end, the more i pick up on things. i love my little agents high on hope and the power of friendship.
it still bothers me that they didn't leave the marie footage when ethan is under the ice. because it would've been good to have the same woman he got involved in the whole imf thing for, be the one bringing him back to life. and then he wakes up and sees grace, the woman who got him in this big mess as well and made it so difficult at the beginning.
god there are so many things i still struggle with in the last reckoning. also, give me the original cut.
i'd find in your eyes is where all my dreams come true
and if you ended up leaving, i just don't know what i'd do
that's why i'm too scared to tell my heart about you
