09/07/2018 at the opening of the new Grace Exhibition Space location on Avenue C on the LES I “re-perform” (insofar as such a thing is possible) my very first “performance art piece proper” from 2008, performed at the old Grace Space in Brooklyn when I was 24.
To frame the action, I said some things about the problematics of nostalgia, anxiety, and community, then asked folks present who identify as “performance artists” to help me realize the action by being the pillar (see first photo, from the original performance, which i slid down) and by making the sound of the elevated J train passing by the old Grace’s second story location.
“Oniono” action involves onions, an onion helmet, frozen peas, a hollow metal rod, ladder, pillar, drill, screws, and a little bit of text as well as some satirical/theatrical enactment of control and loss scenarios.
