Marie *looking at Mace*: Uh. I can’t believe I’m gonna sleep with her.
Graciela: Well... You don’t have to.
Marie: No. I’m gonna.
So I saw the 355 last night and read some statements about the apparent lack of characterisation for its main ladies. Fair enough, I suppose, BUT, nothing that a little imagination couldn't fix for atleast 4 of the main characters.
1. MACE: oh, Mace... I hate to say it, but the straight romance is so prominent that you can probably fill in every romantic clichée EVER. Falling for the wrong guy: even the film points out how stereotypical that is, BUT, stereotypes are a shorthand to fill in characters with. Plus, she doesn't stay there. The film tells a story that starts with a kiss and ends in poison. A woman's weapon, because "the world is changing". Mace brings across that change in herself.
2. KHADIJAH: very interesting. A black lady running tech. A lady in tech not too geeky or isolated, but with a private life that's thriving? Imagine what kind of backstory that takes. Imagine what her daily life looks like in academia. And also, I really want to know how she and Mace met, what their friendship has been before, the first time they got drunk together, everything. There's years worth of character development with those two which somebody could headcanon (any volunteers?). Plus when shit goes down, she KEEPS working. Nobody expected Marie to be affected all that much, but the strength that Khadijah displays there is insane.
3. MARIE: we are actually told quite a lot about Marie, since the team does research on her before she joins them. The lack of information they find is quite the Intel in itself. No private life, daddy issues supreme, insubordinate, hotheaded, and trigger happy. And THIS is the person they let handle weapons and explosives? Hilarious. I bet the team can't put on Christmas lights without Marie blowing up the tree, Mace wrapping presents while sipping her whiskey (neat, of course), Khadijah trying to figure out who programmed the playlist to play one song on a loop, and Graciela losing her mind because "she wanted ONE NORMAL CHRISTMAS"
4. GRACIELA: Graciela is amazing because she is simultaneously the baby and the mom, and so the gang adopts her. She has no idea about guns and stuff and needs to be protected but also, she's an expert on psychology and probably the one holding everyone else together. That "not now, Gracie" scene? Too precious. She can definitely stand up for herself, even if it's awkward or she doesn't know what she's doing, but along with Marie, this is the character that grows the most throughout the film.
And they say there was no character development.
i'm rewatching The 355, because i have great taste, and idk I think you guys are missing out on the absolute delight that was Diane Kruger and Penelope Cruz's chemistry and potential in here
