You mentioned a career change, what are you moving from / to?
Great question!
Long story short:
I'm going from an admin/communications job to grad school for a master's in cartography and GIS!
Short story long:
I've been doing admin and cooperative purchasing for a library consortium since 2021 and my coworkers are wonderful and it's a great workplace. However, it's fully remote and it's been difficult managing that since the beginning and has only gotten harder. The last couple years I've been living alone and got an ADHD diagnosis and last summer I realized I was at the point where I just couldn't see a path forward at my job that felt reasonable or interesting. Remote work just doesn't work for me :/
My undergrad was in archaeology, anthropology, and history, and by the time I finished that (hashtag 2020 grad, uffda), I knew a further degree in archaeology wouldn't be good for me, and and didn't even really want the entry level jobs I was applying for and getting no response on.
I've always been a map fiend and took some cartography classes the last couple semesters of undergrad and by then it was too late to add another major, but I figured if I ever went back to school it might be for that. The end of undergrad was....rough so I pushed that thought aside for a while and only the past year have I felt like I could do it.
So yay!
I applied and got into Minnesota for the fall and should hear back from Wisconsin in the next couple weeks. I'm leaning Minnesota right now, which would be a big move, but I'm feeling like if I don't use the opportunity to live somewhere else for a while, I don't know when I'll make that opportunity again for myself.
Either way they're non-thesis programs and no guaranteed funding so we'll be racking up the debt 😎💰
anyone knows how to decide if a years-long interest is a 'doing a phd' or 'making videoessays' about it type deal...
27•03•23// can't say no to a baked good! Look at the adorable latte candle I picked up at the pop up market! Those are wax coffee beans on the top, I'm obsessed.

Okay even if this is no longer primarily a study blog, I still have study / work goals I wanna talk about. 🥺
Anyway, todays goal is to cover all the reading for my new project at work and make a list of all my questions/queries.

I never read Maus. In our 12th grade curriculum it was Night. And I was the only Jew in my section. Eyes would pass over me when passages were read. And I think it was the first time these Midwest kids glimpsed the reality that the numbers they learned about in history across the hall, were human beings like the girl sitting three seats down.
That is why we tell these stories. You are not meant to like it. You are meant to learn from it.
2.9.2021 // yesterday morning vibes ft. an @ohk4te work-with-me. i've been making surprisingly good headway on thesis-reading thanks to rediscovering pomodoro after... 1.5 years of online grad school lol
