But when you discover that there are yellow-washed buildings wherever you go – from barns and villas to the church and village inn – you realise you've made the right choice. Built on a plot of land in the quiet rural countryside on the Po Valley, Gradella seems to be a somewhat random choice of destination for a weekend getaway. But the truth is this village has a long past going back to the Early Middle Ages, with a castle that is said to have been destroyed in the 13th century. Why are all the buildings painted in different shades of yellow with a red-brick framework? Who knows. But it looks beautiful! Gradella is a tiny agricultural village in the province of Cremona where all the houses are painted yellow. There simply isn't another village quite like it in Italy! 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: No buses stop at Gradella. However, the nearest bus stop is in Pandino, a couple of kilometres away. To get to Pandino – whose medieval castle is definitely worth a visit – catch the K525 bus from Milan San Donato bus station using the M3 metropolitan line. Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 17/03/2019. * Repost * The region of Lombardia (Lombardy) in northern Italy has 20 villages that have been declared 'the prettiest villages in Italy'. I haven't posted photos of Lombardy for a while, so here's one that you won't too soon. The rural village of Gradella has been around from as far back as the 8th/9th Centuries. Its history is closely linked to the Maggi family, a noble family from Brescia who devoted a great deal of time and attention to the village by improving the quality of life and services there. In fact, one of the most important landmarks in Gradella is the 'Villa Maggi', which can be visited by appointment only. This charming village was also popular over the centuries with the Lords of Milan who often went there for their holidays because it is surrounded by woods, making it ideal for hunting. While Gradella is quite a small village, it does definitely deserve a nice, quiet stroll. I was struck by the houses that characterise the village, all painted in yellow and profiled with red bricks. It felt as though I was in a world of doll houses! There isn't actually a bus that takes you directly to Gradella. I got there first by taking a bus from Milan San Donato bus station (which can be reached on the M3 metro line). The bus is run by 'Autoguidovie' and the line you need to look for is K520 that heads to Crema, a big town in the province of Cremona. However, on that route you will need to stop at Pandino and from there walk to Gradella (just over 3km). It's a nice quiet stretch of road in the Lombard countryside that I'd recommend on a bright sunny day.
