Dramatic Arts analysis/grading Part Three
This post is a tad late, but I had a few loose ends to tie up regarding late library visits and question follow-ups on this account, so I’ve been unable to reach my notes. Better late than never, I suppose. Thankfully, tonight’s class went much more smoothly than yesterday, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the remaining groups performed.
*Kelly; Tamburlaine--B+. Her piece was a bit shorter than the rest of the class’s selections since it was only a monologue, but she has a very natural speaking voice with nice volume and timbre and excellent acting. She did play the emotion rather than the action at times, but overall splendid work.
*Colton and Kingsley; Doctor Faustus--A. I was perhaps most surprised by this pairing since either way they cast themselves I would, for the first time, be seeing either a female Faustus or a female Mephistopheles. Kingsley chose Mephistopheles, and she played the part with a very modern sensibility, similar to Darvill’s performance at the Globe a few years ago. A quite magnetic performance, actually, matched beat for beat by Colton. The only reason I cannot give them a perfect score is because Colton fluffed the “had I as many souls as there be stars” line, but not so much that it impeded the scene.
*Hayes and Chang; King Lear--B. I was a bit worried about this group, given Hayes’s tendency to “ham it up”, as he puts it. And although he did indulge himself a bit too much in a scene where he has comparatively fewer lines (perhaps he felt the need to make up for lost time?), he was still pleasant to watch. And Chang made an excellent Fool, making great use of the theater space and providing a great physical presence. And she certainly knows how to milk for laughter--I’ve never seen a Fool deliver one of the lengthier lines while hanging upside-down from the seat of the throne with her head on the floor.
*Greenview and Kent; Richard III--A-. This was yet another first, seeing as this time Lady Anne would be wooed by a female Richard. A few weeks ago, I almost urged these two to find a new scene, but I’m very glad now that I didn’t. Greenview makes a fantastic Richard, especially through her use of body language to both mask her true intentions and suggest her deformity. And Kent matched her very well, though she did seem a bit overwhelmed at first. A fairly static scene without much motion onstage, but staged in such a way that it was never dull to watch.
Now at last, I can finish this chapter on in-class evaluations and turn my attention to written papers. I can get what I have left done over the holiday, but I do intend to spend as much of these four days as I possibly can with my Lydia.
