☕️ historical anachronisms in the soulcalibur series.
There are actually some that I can let slide... to a point (before I get into nitpicking mode). For my fics, I try to strike a balance between using recognizable imagery from canon and not dwelling much on anachronisms if unavoidable, but I'll try to write around them anyway. As far as gameplay is concerned, I'm not immune to the rule of cool though.
Sophitia's faith in the Greek pantheon and pretty much every costume she's had are deliberate anachronisms, so I can't find it in me to complain. The same applies Aeon's connection to Ares.
I know I just made a note in "The Devil's Due" on Ao3 about this, but Cervantes looking like he stepped out of the Golden Age of Piracy also comes with the territory. (It's a little detail, but it doesn't help that the tricorn hat was his dad's.) The same goes for the skull-and-crossbones flag on his ship, though calling it a Jolly Roger in the fic itself was a step too far for me. It's a bit of a stretch on my part, but skull-and-crossbones symbolism has been around since the late Middle Ages (in cemeteries). I've read that the earliest attested skull flag was used by 17th century Barbary corsairs, but that one had a green field.
But I don't kid myself with Taki's bodysuits or Ivy's 1P outfits. I mean, come on.
For some ones that really bug me, the soldier's uniforms the SC2 intro jar me every time I see them. So do the maid outfits on Marienbard and Jacqueline in SC4.
