Making a hollow directly on the inner book

First up, the hollow is not such an integral piece in a books structure. Certainly it does support the weight of the inner book to keep it firmly connected to the cover, but the book won’t fall apart within the next year because it doesn’t have a hollow! I find it helpful in hand bookbinding in order to bring cover and inner book together though. Before pasting down the endpapers the spine is glued to the hollow and that’s when I can position my book properly. It that step gets messed up, only the hollow is a goner the endpapers are still good. This first connection also makes it way easier to paste down without the inner book moving about.

There are two ways of making a hollow that I know of. 

1. cutting the spine stiffener and wrapping paper around it to for a tube 2. working the tube directly on the book block.

Both have their pros and cons imo. Personally I prefer the second version because I usually get a better fit working directly on the inner book (also, there’s no chance to glue the tube askew to the spine)

First I cut some paper to size. I mostly cut it about 1cm shorter than my book. This one was a scrap piece of paper that was a close enough fit so I used it was it was. (btw for making the hollow it helps to work with the grain direction as well. In general when binding a book the grain direction should be parallel to the spine)   

 Then I apply glue to the spine as wide as the hollow and glue the paper on with a short piece sticking out on the up-side and a long one on the down-side. The short tail needs to be wide enough to fold over, but not as wide as the text block. 

Now there’s a lot of turning and folding to do. I fold over the short tail. Flip the book over and do the same with the long-tail end.

To get the fold on both sides exactly level with the book block, I fold the paper first over to the book block and then back.

I turn the short tail side back up and apply a thin layer of glue to the small flap.

Now comes the slightly tricky part. The short flap needs to be folded down when pulling up the long tail to stick to it.

Usually my hollow is still a bit wide and uneven at that point. As long as the glue is still wet I can pull the long tail tight to get a snug hollow. 

Last time to fold the long tail back over and cut the excess off.
