I know that movie is a bit too bizarre for my taste (yes the new head of Granada was into that - according to Hardwicke in one 1993 interview) but the only relevant thing in it might be Watson checking Holmes's syringe box and content it was unused.
Also I suspected some lines might be inspired by the stage play you know which one. It's very painful and sad to think about it. *Sigh*
When watching the ITV Holmes, I feel myself feeling bad for Watson quite often. He tries his best even when he doesn't do it quite right, but Holmes tends to shoot him down.
