The Stanley Cup Finals are here — but before McDavid, Ekblad, or the Panthers ever hit the ice, a forgotten Black hockey league was rewriting the game. Founded in 1895 by Black church leaders in Canada, the Colored Hockey League pioneered the slap shot, butterfly goaltending, and a style of play that was decades ahead of the NHL. They played with pride, purpose, and innovation — only to be erased by racism and white business interests. But their legacy lives on in every puck drop.

Grant Fuhr’s Two-Assist Period Highlights Historic 1983-84 Season

Grant Fuhr didn’t just stop pucks during the 1983-84 season, he helped score goals too.

On November 6, 1983, the Oilers goalie recorded two assists in the same period during an 8–5 win over the Jets in Winnipeg. Both helpers came on late Wayne Gretzky goals, including the game-winner with just eight seconds left.

Fuhr finished the season with a then-unthinkable 14 assists, setting an NHL record for goaltenders that still stands today.
