Danish graphical artist Palle Nielsen was born August 8, 1920 (d. 2000). His strange and bold works were often done as image series, and very close to being graphic novels without text. His talents were also used in book illustration…
Nielsen first trained as a commercial artist at the Arts and Crafts Academy in Copenhagen in the 30s, and later at the Royal Art Academy in the 40s. In the late 60s he taught there himself as a professor. His work is at many museums, including MoMA in NYC.

Aksel Jørgensen (Feb 3., 1883 - 1957) was a Danish artist whose graphical works set the tone for years to come and influenced several generations of artists in Denmark. Jørgensen was largely autodidact but still rose to the position of professor at the Royal Academy which he held for over 30 years. His students included Asger Jorn, Albert Mertz, Bjørn Wiinblad, Gerhard Sausmark, Ib Spang Olsen, Palle Nielsen, a.m.o.
Jørgensen mastered the woodcut technique and his first works depicted life in a working class neighborhood in Copenhagen whose drunkards, brawlers, prostitutes and entertainers he loved to sketch. Later he refined his woodcuts even more in an Art Nouveau style, as witnessed by this work - one of the illustrations for Oehlenschlæger’s poem, The Norse Gods.

Today’s birthday is that of artist Jørgen Rømer (May 9, 1923 - 2007). Rømer was an art historian and explorer of old techniques of graphic art. He mainly used materials inspired by the artists of the 17th century, until he felt his health began to suffer from the chemical compounds.
He then shifted to aquarelle and pencil techniques, often simply painting on used envelopes and scrap paper, as in this piece from 1987… Most of these pieces were done at night and left on the kitchen table as ‘messages’ for his wife, so she could see ‘how he was doing’.
