Last week we visited the amazing exhibition on László Moholy-Nagy at the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin "Sensing the Future: László Moholy-Nagy, Media and the Arts".

One of the teacher at the Bauhaus school in Weimar and Dessau, Moholy Nagy's works covered "a wide range of aesthetic investigations": painting, photograpy, typography and editorial design (the series of the Bauhaus Bücher and among them the seminal text "Malerei Photographie Film"), but also sculpture, exhibition/spatial design and motion design (for example the "Light Space Modulator", also known as "Light Prop for an Electric Stage", and his studies for a performative, inclusive and "total" experience of the theater).

His experimental use of new media represented a new and groundbreaking approach to art and gestaltung, still relevant and contemporary today.

In 1994 Muriel Cooper presented work at the TED5 conference in Monterey, CA that changed the way designers thought of the possibilities of electronic media. The work, from her group at the MIT Media Lab‘s Visible Language Workshop (or VLW), took typography, literally, into three dimensions — and gave it dynamics and interactivity that had never been seen before.

Just watched this great interview with Tibor Kalman, in which he describes his ideas about design, modernism and politics. 

He also goes very personal during the interview, talking about the illness which at that time he had to deal with.

Very inspiring.
