Week 2: Further Research

This week in class our lecturer introduced the Adobe Photoshop software. This is already a software I am quite familiar with as I taught myself during high school. 

For my self directed learning this week I focused on the timeline of Tibor Kalman’s later career. This includes a period of 5 years from 1990 to 1995. I would also like to reference his earlier work as a in-house graphic designer for Barnes and Noble.

From 1989 to 1993 Tibor Kalman worked as creative director for the magazine Interviews within his studio M&Co. 

In 1993 he left M&Co and Interviews to work full time for the magazine Colors as editor-in-chief. He also moved to Rome in this time.

In 1995 Kalman received a diagnosis for lymphatic cancer and quit his job to travel back home to the US. After working for several more years at M& Co, he passed away in 1999.

Introducing: Tibor Kalman

“I’m always trying to turn things upside down to see if they look any better”

Tibor Kalman was a Hungarian- born American designer who lived the majority of his life in Poughkeepsie, New York. While his portfolio includes work for what is now Barnes & Noble and graphic design firm M& Co, his most notable work as a designer was his work as editor-in-chief of Colors, ‘A magazine about the rest of the world.’

As a designer Kalman was always interested in conveying his ideas and political ideologies in his work. He used his role in Colors to promote public awareness on topics and raise discussions.

My design hero Tibor Kalman’s brand identity for Meatpacking’s beloved FLORENT diner, 1985-1993. Witty, unpretentious, progressive and at times perverse in its social commentaries, Kalman’s identity work for Florent endures. A long-term collaboration between Kalman’s design firm M&Co and restaurant owner Florent Morellet, the legendary restaurant’s identity engaged artists and designers seeking a safe haven for the queer community in the midst of the AIDS crisis…becoming a hub for those who felt out of place and other. This was meatpacking before meatpacking… a world away from the glossy restaurants and clubs uptown. Kalman’s work has inspired me since I was a kid. We were a Benetton family growing up, and Kalman’s provocative campaigns for the clothing brand were plastered all over their stores, and are my earliest memories of the concept of branding. But for me Kalman’s work for Florent is a standout in his catalogue, because it was his passion project (story goes he did design work in exchange for meals). It’s a reminder that as creatives, side projects can sometimes lead to the most authentic and impactful work. I’ve been thinking about my favorite neighborhood indies a lot recently.
