Since 2010 Scotts Miracle-Gro and Major League Baseball have formed a marketing partnership. The Scotts Company LLC (Scotts cares for the grass in many major league ballparks and in return they can use Major League Baseball's endorsement and logo in marketing their 4 step lawn care. The marriage of Scotts and Major League Baseball has been good for Scotts and good for the ballparks and they agreed to extend the marketing agreement in 2014.
There were protests about the "marriage." An environmental coalition was unhappy with the agreement. The techniques Scotts uses to produce ballpark green grass are not appropriate for residential lawns, the group argued. The environmentalists complained that the Scotts grass grow program fosters a heavy reliance on hazardous herbicides, insecticides and synthetic fertilizers. They added that while the beautiful grass produced in ballparks may need the Scotts program because ballpark turf is built on artificial soil that sits atop underground irrigation, this doesn't prove that Scotts is the best plan for smaller residences where there is natural soil. Unlike ballparks, the coalition continued, private lawns need a maintenance approach that addresses soil health, aeration, mowing height, appropriate fertilization, and determination of the best grass species for the local conditions."
The environmentalists sent a letter to Major League Baseball, in which they expressed concern that Baseball's endorsement of Scotts would convince many homeowners to use the 4 step lawn care package, which will expose residential lawns to harmful pesticides and artificial fertilizer. Pesticides, they noted, harm beneficial insects and earthworms that are essential for healthy soil; pollute local water; and are harmful to all life including children who like to play on grass. With respect to synthetic fertilizers, the environment supporters expressed concerns that the nitrogen laden material would harm microorganisms, restrict air and water circulation, over-accelerate turf growth, cause thatch build-up, and contribute to harmful runoff that would pollute water above and below the ground.
While the coalition made a number of interesting points, none of Scotts Miracle-Gro lawn care techniques are cause for legal restrictions of any kind and Major League Baseball ignored the complaint.
