Arts for All 100 Counties

What's the Deal with Grassroots Arts?
We've been talking about this particular North Carolina Arts Council program a lot over the last few years. Here's why:
1. This program has the infrastructure to reach all 100 counties in NC.
2. It touches so many lives--administrators, artists, regular citizens...
3. It is a program that our legislators have already demonstrated interest in.
So what is it really?
How it Works
Grassroots Arts is a funding program that allocates an equal base amount to every county and then additional funds based on population. The local community then gets to decide how to use the arts funding. It can contribute to anything from administrative overhead to artist grants to performances to festivals and other programs. At our current level of recurring funding, every county gets a base of $6,000. Rural counties with smaller populations might not receive much more than that each year. Yet...
The Expansion We Want
The Grassroots Arts expansion in the 2017 Agenda for the Arts would allocate a $30,000 yearly base to every county with the goal that every county has enough to hire at least one paid staff member for the arts.
What would more arts in more places mean for our state?
What could stability in staff and funding mean for your organization?
What kind of strengthening could you imagine in the spirit of your community, the imaginations of its youth, the influence of its creative culture?
