With all of the emphasis that has been put on the food and drug industries in the last few years... the issues in the cosmetic and personal care industry have been overlooked by many. There is still very little regulation on our products in the United States; however, across seas, there are thousands of ingredients that have been banned. The knowledge is starting to spread and people are becoming aware. What you put ON your body is just as important as what you put IN your body!!

SO many people are unaware of the issue about “ingredients” in our products in the U.S. Just because products are for sale on the shelf does NOT mean they are safe to use. The fact that over 1,370 chemicals are banned in The European Union and just 11 are banned in the U.S. speaks volumes. You cannot argue the facts...

- "The antiperspirants contain an active ingredient that is scientifically validated to accelerate brain aging and cause Alzheimer's." - "Commercial deodorant often contain hormone-disrupting chemical fragrances that absorb into the skin and disrupt the endocrine system." And, "Antiperspirants, on the other hand, work in a much different way (than deodorant). Antiperspirants work by blocking the sweat glands, stopping the secretion of proteins and fatty acids. Most antiperspirants are made with Aluminum chloride, aluminum chlorohydrate or other aluminum compounds. Since antiperspirants change the physiology of the body, they are actually considered an over-the-counter drug in the US and are regulated by the FDA."

We don’t often think of children’s clothing as a source of toxic chemical exposure. But toxic chemicals are used in clothing for a variety of uses, including dyes, screen printing, stain protection, and waterproofing. New testing by the Washington State Department of Ecology finds many toxic chemicals remain in children's clothing.

Did you know that cute character shirt your child is wearing probably contains hundreds of toxic chemicals? These chemicals are used in all different processes including the dyes, waterproofing, fire proofing, screen printing, and stain protection. Just some of the samples tested in the study listed below contained PHTHALATES (BBP, DEHP, DBP, DEP, DnHP, DINP - chemicals of high concern to children), SOLVENTS (ethylene glycol, MEK, D4: octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane - chemicals of high concern to children) and METALS (arsenic, cadmium, lead, antimony, molybdenum, cobalt).

Clothing with nano particle and silver technology (silver particles and nanoparticles are embedded into the clothing to prohibit stains and bacterial growth from sweat) are also a concern. Nano particles are small enough to cross our skin-cell’s membrane and burrow into organs. Bioaccumulation from these can pose many health threats such as production of free radicals, DNA damage and gene mutation.

Look for certification programs such as Oeko-Tex and Gots, which have responsible manufacturing standards that restrict use of certain chemicals and limit others. If budget is a concern, focus on clothing that your child spends most of their time in (pajamas, under garments).

Most people believe our personal care products are regulated by the government; however, it is just the opposite. The FDA does not regulate beauty, personal care, cosmetic and home cleaning products. Companies can put whatever they want in their products without testing their chosen ingredients. In fact, many companies that manufacture products for the U.S. have to “clean up” or change their formulas before selling these same products across seas (yet they are allowed to sell them here in the U.S.). Over 1,371 chemicals are currently banned from personal care products in The European Union, while just 11 are banned here in the United States.
