Grave Hex — Vermian Death (Night Terrors)

“Steeping Master Worm Flesh” is the first song on Grave Hex’s new tape Vermian Death, and its title is one of those delights of syllabic and syntactic chaos that death metal seems to specialize in producing. Things get a bit more legible as you move along: “worm flesh” is clear enough (and gross enough for the gruesome variety of OSDM Grave Hex likes to play), and if “Master Worm” takes a fantastical turn, then the worm has certainly turned for us in all the relevant ways. “Steeping” is the kicker, and it delivers its kick right at the phrase’s outset, disorienting and strange. What’s a “steeping master”? By the time you attach the participial adjective to the right term — steeping flesh from that Master Worm, achieving just the right degree of corruption and stink — you’ll catch on to the exact kind of yuck the song has on offer, but your brain will be spinning, too.
Formed by veterans of the Finnish doom metal and hardcore scenes, Grave Hex play old school death metal as it was immortalized by Sunlight Studios. Their debut album Vermian Death will be co-released on August 22nd through Night Terrors Records (cassette) and Cavernous Records (CD).
