Not to sound too mean but what do you expect me to do? I get that sapphic ships get overshadowed and underrated all the time in comparison to achillean ones. Believe me. I am a lesbian who is constantly pushing their sapphic ships everywhere.

But you can't expect people to suddenly stop posting about the achillean ships they enjoy just because they're more popular than YOUR favorite ships. Is it bothersome that achillean ships get more attention for the sole reason of being a male pairing while sapphic ships get ignored or not even suggested? Yeah!!!! It's frustrating.

But if you want some change in the amount of content you see then it's YOUR fight only and others should be allowed to post whatever they like. If you want to post only sapphic ships or you're bothered by them being talked in the same light as achillean ones, then it's YOUR choice to make.

Fandom is NOT activism!!! Fandom is meant to be enjoyed in whatever way you want. Fandom is to interpret media in your own way. So, honestly, if I want to make a simple post comparing two ships I like, why should I be trying to defend myself here for that? If people don't like it, then they can just block me, scroll, move on, etc.

i've always said jensen is a chameleon and his answers depend on the vibes of the crowd. a jaytwo / hostile to destiel crowd is going to get different answers than a more destiel positive space. and some people might hate that, but you have to remember these are fan conventions where they are working a job and that job is to entertain the fans. if you're in a room full of people booing destiel you're probs not going to start talking abt destiel. also, lets not forget that obsessive jaytwo / w* fans in the past have threatened his family / kids / wife. once danneel was gifted something with rusty fishhooks and hurt herself. another time someone left a dead kitten on their doorstep. like SORRY y'all but i don't blame him or envy him for having to straddle the fandom line between two huge ships. it's different for jared or misha where they can solely stick to "bros" or "destiel" sides. because their character isn't smack-dab in the middle of the two biggest ships in the fandom. he's never going to please everyone, and maybe he really does just see dean and cas as a deep friendship, which is fine, i don't need an actor's headcanon to validate my interpretation. but i think it's always going to be futile to continue to ask him abt these things because he is in a lose-lose position with fans no matter what. and again, i don't blame him for trying to please the crowd or whatever because his past experiences with obsessive fans has not been great.

I guess the biggest pattern for this guy is that he's a cuck. 💀 It's obviously wish fulfillment for smut and not intended to be a character study but like it kinda rubs me the wrong way sometimes.

Also gonna point out the fact that Price tends to be written as 100% correct all the time. Always the good guy who is doing the right thing and I feel like that just undermines the whole point of his character being morally grey. He's willing to do bad things for the greater good from his perspective. That doesn't mean that his perspective is always correct. Don't fall for that propaganda that the series tries to push.

He cares about people more than the politics which is great but don't forget he's fucking ruthless. The first mission of the game you literally see him throw a man in a bomb vest over a railing when he thinks Gaz won't be able to deactivate it in time. Sacrifices for the "greater good." But not that man's greater good. He also threatened a man's family to get information out of him, whether he was bluffing or not. He put the gun in someone else's (Gaz's) hand and left it up to him.

"UwU softboi" Nah, fam. This man is ANGRY. That's like his character introduction. He's pissed that the people in charge won't let him act. He wants more autonomy to be more aggressive and I've seen him reduced to "good boi Wyll" from Baldur's Gate 3.

I do agree he has a softer side 100%. Gaz's anger comes from a place of compassion. He's tired of watching people die or get hurt when he could have done something. He wants to act first to prevent worse outcomes later. Just look at Clean House. That whole mission is messy with blurred lines of morality but ultimately they feel justified in the end because they stop a worse ending.

But as someone who is also extremely angry, that shit will come out in less than favorable ways. Getting into arguments because you're mad at the situation, blowing up at seemingly small trespasses, etc. It doesn't mean he won't catch himself and correct but let the man get frustrated and angry in your fics please. Also let's be honest when has a military been good about getting their soldiers therapy.

I probably don't even need to address the fact that he's completely overlooked so much. I think we all know the reason for that. Hm.

I feel like this is the most widespread misunderstanding of a character ngl. It kind of baffles me.

He's not a dark sexy booktok romance archetype. I feel like everyone projects ideas onto him because of the mask?? Something something about a blank canvas.

From what we see in the games, he's sarcastic but focused, a little grumpy but caring enough to distract Soap with dumb ass dad jokes in Las Almas. Like that's such a telling moment for me. Soap is the newest guy in the reboot. He's alone, injured, has no weapon, and is surrounded by enemies that will kill him without hesitation. But Ghost is able to guide him over the radio and coach him in survival while keeping his spirits up with banter.

He complained about Johnny at first but clearly grew to like him so I feel like he's also stubborn, but not entirely prideful. He's a soldier after all, you've gotta ditch that pretty early on or you won't do well. Would absolutely rag on someone to show affection.

He's also loud as fuck. Idk why no one has talked about this. Bro basically yells every voice line except for a few occasions.

He's a bottom but a lot of y'all aren't ready for that conversation.

John "Soap" MacTavish

Golden retriever ADHD personified. Is he a bit goofy at times especially with banter? Yeah, sure but I fail to see where everyone is getting the idea that he's this class clown. Bro is incredibly focused and takes his job seriously because it's literally life or death.

Also where is the idea that he's some feral sex fiend coming from?? I get playing things up for fan service or indulgence or whatever. That's fine, lean into whatever you need to for your fic but I feel like the characterization of him I see the most is this strange collective consciousness of Soap where everyone is building off each other's depictions of him and not based on the character himself.

Ultimately it's fanfiction, people can write what they want. I'm not going to tell you to stop, but these are just patterns I've noticed that can be a lil irritating when I'm trying to find something that feels in-character. Or something that isn't just wish fulfillment porn.

I deleted the ask, but someone wrote one basically saying "why do you post reaction videos to Helluva Boss? Don't you know the show exploits its workers and they're overworked and get burned out?"

And, I mean, I love your energy, person who asked, definitely hold on to those values and speak up about this. But also, I am afraid I might have some bad news for you about literally the whole entire animation industry.

As near as I can make out from the sparse journalistic reporting that's been done on SpindleHorse -- and as a sidebar, please for the love of god read actual reporting about these things and not just callout posts and fandom discourse -- as near as I can make out, SpindleHorse as a studio is neither all that much better nor all that much worse than basically anywhere else in the industry on their level. It seems like it is (or was? Hazbin Hotel seems to be run differently) a studio mostly run by contracting people on a project-by-project basis, which leads to a crapton of turnover, and a huge need for organizing and onboarding, which according to the reporting I have read, the producers and freelancers have struggled to balance and manage properly, which has negatively impacted a number of the workers.

Top that with the usual catty, clique-based backbiting, sniping and poorly managed conflict resolution that's just kinda endemic in creative environments mostly staffed by twentysomethings and stressed out freelancers, and you have the recipe for a workplace where a lot of people are going to have a great time and feel creatively fulfilled, and a lot of people are going to come away feeling justifiably burnt the fuck out and exploited.

All of this is... not especially unusual for the animation industry, or indeed for any creative industry. Which is not to say that it is good, or that it should be allowed to be normal, or that it shouldn't be reported on and criticized (and please for the love of god support unionization efforts because that's the only thing that will actually address these kinds of systemic problems). It's just to say that if those kinds of issues are the line in the sand you draw where you refuse to engage with a studio's output...

Then, for starters, say goodbye to basically all of anime, because the Japanese animation industry is actively in a state of crisis trying to recruit new talent because its working conditions and pay are so astonishingly abysmal. And the horror stories that escape from that industry make the issues at SpindleHorse look like summer camp at times.

But you also have to say goodbye to a lot of American and European animation. Please do not imagine that Disney and its subcontractors, or that Nickelodeon or Warner Bros, are benevolent employers. They exploit their staff brutally and are currently trying to crush the labor value of animation with threats of generative AI being used to replace jobs. But those corporations also have extremely well-funded PR departments and the ability to silence employees with NDAs and threats of blackballing, so you don't get to hear as many of the horror stories as you might from a smaller independent studio that's less able to silence criticism by holding people's careers hostage.

All of this is to say that 1) it's valid and important to have criticism of both large and small-scale animation studios, and to keep the well-being and happiness of the workers higher in your priorities than the output of Products™.

And 2) if you're going to have a principle for what kinds of problems make a studio's output morally untouchable for you, and what kinds of problems you think should make a studio's output untouchable to other people, you do need to apply that principle consistently to the entire industry, and not just to the independent animation studio that happens to be surrounded by the internet's most inflammatory fandom discourse.

If you don't apply that principle consistently, maybe don't send reproachful messages to strangers scolding them for not living up to your standards, and even if you do apply that principle consistently, maybe still don't do that, because it's mostly quite annoying, and doesn't really do anything to support animation workers struggling for better working conditions.

The Animation Guild in the US is currently in the middle of a bargaining process with their industry, and they have a social media press kit as well as relevant talking points on their website which you can use to post in solidarity with the workers. If it comes to a full industry strike, consider donating to their strike funds to help them maintain pressure. Outside of the US, try and find out what (if any) local unions exist for animation workers, and maybe sign up to their mailing lists. They will let you know what kind of support they need from you.
