Plant of the Day

In the Sky Meadow, Royal Horticultural Society Garden Hyde Hall, Essex, the seed heads of Rudbeckia maxima (great coneflower) were still providing a display having survived the winter storms so far. On close inspection as the seeds fall an amazing geometric texture has been revealed where they were attached. In the summer there were simple wax-coated blue-grey leaves and yellow, long petalled flowers with a dark central cone.
