Plant of the Day
Sunday 2 August 2020
In the order beds of Cambridge Botanic Garden the Echinops ritro (globe thistle), Echinops bannaticus (Hungarian globe thistle) and Echinops sphaerocephalus (glandular globe thistle, great globe thistle, pale globe thistle) were flowering. They are all herbaceous perennial, with blue flowers from Echinops ritro and the taller species being Echinops bannaticus. The flowers are a valuable food source for insects.
