The biennial Dipsacus fullonum (common teasel) produces foliage in the first year and in the second tall flowering stems. The small blue flowers are great for bees while the seedheads remain throughout the winter providing a food source for birds such as goldfinches and providing an architectural feature.

This deciduous shrub has curved, tubular, violet flowers in lax slender panicles at the ends of the branches in late summer. It thrives in a sheltered, south facing location and can be hard pruned in the winter.
