This morning the Golden Globe nominees were announced. While there are plenty of nominations I'm excited about, the one that makes my heart happy is for @dkharbour 💗 Thank you, @goldenglobes for recognizing his beautiful and nuanced work as Chief Jim Hopper in Stranger Things 2. I was in awe of the compassion and strength Harbour continued to bring to Hopper this season. I think he's the heart of the show. Since I was a kid, I have been obsessed with dinosaurs. Everyone knows how much I love them! Jurassic Park's Dr. Ellie Sattler had a huge influence on me. Not only did she help introduce me to the magic of dinosaurs but she showed me the limitless possibilities a woman has when she's brave enough to carve out a space for herself! I cannot emphasis enough what an inspiring role model she was for me growing up. Ellie, of course, is just one of many dynamic and incredible characters Laura Dern has beautifully brought to life. One of my other personal favorites is Frannie Lancaster from The Fault in our Stars. She was the heart of that film and a wonderful representation of her literary counterpart. After having a very overwhelming October and taking the entire month of November off from posting for my mental health, I finally finished up my annual Frantastic Frights series for 2020 today. As some of you know, October is always a hard month for me, as much as I wish it still weren't. I strive to someday soon get to a place where it is no longer a painful time for me. I try my best to distract myself each year with a creative project that's Halloween themed, since I love spooky stuff so much. I am grateful to everyone who reached out to me on the anniversary and or because they sensed I was struggling, and appreciate how encouraging everyone was of me still finishing the series, despite my taking a break. I hope you all enjoyed learning about these spooktacular performances, especially if you were unfamiliar with the films. I know the posts were long but I really do love writing a character analysis! 🎃 (I took November off from posting to focus on the things that really mattered in my life but am excited to finish this series because Halloween is something us spooky kids have in our hearts all year round!) Happy 31st Day of Halloween! Each day in October (lol I tried my best, guys!), I’ll be sharing performances from some of my favorite Frantastic Frights that have stayed with me. TODAY’S SPOOKTACULAR PERFORMANCE: Florence Pugh as Dani in Midsommar 💀 I started this list with an empowering Dani from my childhood (Hocus Pocus) with the goal of ending it with an empowering Dani from my adulthood (Midsommar). Keeping this spoiler free makes this post a challenge to write, as many of the brilliant acting choices made by @florencepugh are directly connected to pivotal plot points. The film spins on the axis of her remarkable range that enables her to set the the proper tone and pace against a backdrop of an intentionally deceptive, chaotic atmosphere. She takes the rules and aesthetics writer/director Ari Aster used from the horror genre to anchor it in the real life horrors of grief. Her masterful ability to both save and damn Dani is why the film's final frame--whether you find it victorious or disturbing--is so hauntingly satisfying. She taps into a vulnerability I feel we see more in theatre than film, which I mean as a compliment. Midsommar never shies from opportunities to directly and dynamically engage with the audience through her. Because of this, we authentically experience the complexity of Dani's journey with her uncensored, even when her feelings are presented more internalized. Pugh's gift for fully embodying the spectrum of an emotion elevates this intimacy, never feeling predictable, misleading or forced.
