Monuments, memorials, civic statues and sculptures are the most established forms of public art. Often used as a political tool, these are made of strong, heavy materials (marble/bronze) to endure the passage of time.
Numerus civic monuments* have been installed in Greece, most of them during the 20th century, in order to solidify a national identity. This is an ongoing collection of images of these monuments, found on the web and printed on paper.
*In Greek, the word ‘adriandas’ describes the statue of a male hero. Such a word for a heroine does not exist.
