This is one of the finest, but also one of the very few original bronze sculptures of the Classical period (ca. 460 BC). The naked figure represents either Zeus or Poseidon in full stride and it is 2,09 m high. Despite its overall austerity, the figure conveys intense movement and the anatomy is beautifully rendered. The god has a thick beard and his long hair forms elegant curls around the forehead. The eyes, made in a different material, are missing. His left hand is outstretched while his raised right hand clutches a lighting bolt (Zeus) or trident (Poseidon). The sculpture, an exquisite example of the Severe Style, was executed by a very skilled artist, possibly the renowned sculptor Kalamis. 🔹 Zeus o Poseidone dell'Artemision, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Atene (Grecia). Nonostante la sua generale austerità, la figura trasmette un movimento intenso e l'anatomia è ben rappresentata. Il dio ha una folta barba e i suoi lunghi capelli formano eleganti riccioli intorno alla fronte. Gli occhi, realizzati in un materiale diverso, sono mancanti. La mano sinistra è distesa mentre la destra alzata sorregge un fulmine (Zeus) o un tridente (Poseidone). The city was founded by Greek colonists in the 8th century BC with the name of Parthenope and subsequently, in the 6th century, it was refounded and called Neapolis ("new city"). Under the dominion of Rome maintained a certain autonomy. In the theater of the city even the emperor Nero wanted to perform as an actor, as Suetonius wrote (Nero, 20,2): "Nero made his debut in Naples and, although the theater had suddenly trembled due to an earthquake, he didn't stop singing before finishing the part he had begun". 🔹 Napoli (Italia), corridoio delle quinte del teatro greco-romano (I-II secolo d.C.), resti della costruzione oggi inglobati dagli edifici moderni. La città fu fondata da coloni greci nell' VIII sec. a.C col nome di Parthenope e successivamente, nel VI sec., fu rifondata e chiamata Neapolis ("città nuova"). Sotto il dominio di Roma mantenne una certa autonomia. #Repost @greece_and_rome ・・・ Detail of a parietal fresco from the Villa of the Mysteries, Pompeii (Italy). This suburban villa includes an agricultural area intended for the production of wine with a rebuilt wooden press. The complex dates back to the 2nd century BC but was given its current shape in 80-70 BC. The rooms preserve wonderful examples of second style wall decoration, that is with depictions of architecture, but the complex is famous thanks to the frescoes that probably reproduce a mysterious Dionysian rite, from which the Villa takes its name. 🔹 Particolare di un affresco parietale dalla Villa dei Misteri, Pompei (Italia). Questa villa suburbana comprende un'area agricola destinata alla produzione di vino con una pressa in legno ricostruita. Il complesso risale al II secolo a.C, ma fu data la sua forma attuale nell'80-70 a.C.
