In which Ling is a young noble man sent to study abroad in Amestris, Lanfan is an Xingese opera performer on tour and something sinister lurks in the shadows of Dublith.

(A.K.A my Phantom of the Opera AU, more bellow the cut)

Firstly, I actually came up with several versions until I picked the final one to write! The final one however is more plot vague than any of the previous ones, oopsies. I'll summarize the other versions after I explain the final one.

That is to say it would be way more fitting, if you consider the canon dynamic, to have Ling as Christine and Lanfan as Raoul, but also it can work the other way around considering Ling is more impulsive and Lanfan is the one that lost the relative that raised her. BUT!!! I didn't really felt like giving them fixed roles because it can work in both ways so I purposely left if vague other than Ling being a young noble and Lanfan being an opera performer, you can interpret who will get in the claws of the "phantom" however you want.

The AU itself came into being because after all my years as a fma fan and as a shipper of my OT3, I never once saw a PotO AU from them despite fitting almost seemingly with them. You got an idealistic youth trapped by what seems to be something from beyond and the childhood friend who is in love with them somewhat against this being always talking in the back of their mind. Also because Greed would have a blast playing Erik.

The published fanfic is lingfan, but the AU itself is greedlingfan as previously mentioned. Not all roles are fixed, in the posted fanfic you could assume whichever for lingfan, Bido being vaguely in the role of The Persian/Daroga and one of the seniors of the opera troupe being in the musical version role of Madame Giry. The only fixed role would be Greed as the Phantom and only barely since he's not in any way involved with the opera troupe.

The AU is set un the 1800s version of Amestris, and actually everyone is wearing 19th century clothing because I like it. Ling does not have the horse tail braid since Xing is more Han Imperial China than Qing Dynasty Imperial China and because I couldn't bring in my heart to bald my boy, I just couldn't..... Basic world building is that Ling is the eldest son of the Yao family sent abroad to study in Amestris when he is around 15, his mother is the second wife/madam and Mei is vaguely mentioned as the daughter of the third wife/madam. The first madam does not have children, I briefly considered Columb but then it would meddle with my vague roles idea so he's not even there. Fu used to be a guard and his family just worked for the Yaos, Lanfan was Ling’s childhood playmate, when he eventually dies his granddaughter is kicked out by the First madam because she doesn't have any skills that are useful for a female servant like sewing, so Lanfan ends up joining an opera troupe in her teenage years. The story happens 6 years later when both of them are around 21-22 both to make everyone an adult and to keep it PotO book accurate, lingfan meet again after many years by chance and that's how the story starts.

I actually spent some time researching more in depth about the opera styles because as a fan who only watches I can only absorb so much beyond plot. In the end I decided to leave it vague but as mentioned in the author's note I got most of it from Beijing and Kunqu styles to describe what was going on since those are the more famous and easier to find performances of. Scenes described in the fic were The broken bridge scene and the water fight.

Explanation about the opera roles and how Lanfan refers to Ling as "young master" is in the author's note so I'll refrain from explaining here as well.

I really am not sure if I'll write more because I really want to keep the flair of mystery at the end regarding Greed, but maybe for another thematic Halloween, who knows!

Other versions of the AU

Chinese Opera: this one was a genuine cn opera parody, Ling plays a Sheng, Lanfan plays a Dan and Greed plays a villainous Jing. More PotO parody and Greed looks more like Greedling for obvious reasons. I discarded mostly because it would require too much context and because I got stressed over the Jing makeup.

OG novel but make it Chinese Opera: very closely inspired by the original book from 1909 and even had Kwoloon/Columb as Count Philip de Chagny (Raoul's older brother) but I discarded due to my wish to keep ambiguous among lingfan who was Raoul and who was Christine.

ALW musical parody: self explanatory, a genuine parody of the musical. Discarded because it was too silly (if you watched the musical you know it's hilarious) and I wanted something more "serious" for Halloween.

Honorable mention:

The one stupid low effort doodle of Ling in Christine's nightgown making a thumbs up and Lanfan in Raoul's final lair outfit all skittish that will never see the light of day. Feel free to imagine tho.

Bonus!

I already posted one drawing I did for the AU with Lanfan dressed an an opera character here, but I have some other unfinished doodles. Here's a forever unfinished Lanfan from the very first draft of the idea:

I really like the fandom “what if” scenario where Lan Fan gets possessed by Greed.

I feel like Lan fan would end up getting a therapist in Greed where she gains more self esteem.

I also believe Lan Fan would not hesitate to throw her body across the room when possessed.

(Since Lan Fan lost the arm that has the homunculus symbol on it, my headcanon is that it’s constantly converted in the carbon armor and can easily fall apart if pushed too much since Greed had to create a new arm from scratch)

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I'm Jules! I'm 21, go by she/her, and I'm an Illustration/Graphic Design double major who loves drawing fanart.

How long have you been drawing?

I've been seriously drawing since sixth grade, so about 9 to 10 years now.

Tell us about your Undertale/DELTARUNE Experience! When did you first play/watch? What does it mean to you?

I watched my first Undertale playthrough a bit after the game came out, and I loved it. I wanted to play the game so bad, but I couldn't afford it. I played DELTARUNE when it first came out during a lunch break at university, and I loved it. I replayed the game so many times that day. Thankfully, both games came out on Switch which I have, and I had the money to buy Undertale and play through it!

What inspired your piece for the It’s Only You Zine?

Toby Fox uploaded a screenshot of Kris in a blue city environment, along with the Annoying Fox in a Little Tykes car. I took that screenshot and added a bit of a Mario Kart flare; that's how my piece came about!

What’s next for you after this project?

I'm a TA for my college's high school program this summer; I'll be helping teach Graphic Design again. In addition, I have my first of two Senior Theses starting this fall for my Illustration major, so I will be brainstorming what I want to do for that year-long project.
