He wants to show him everything he knows, even though he doesn’t know anything about this, about kissing boys or flirting with them or doing their makeup or even showing them it’s okay to want to wear makeup in the first place. Still, Louis just wants, wants and wants and wants. It’s what Harry does to him.
Green’s Summary: Louis falls flat on his face for Harry. Harry is very pretty. They’re really cute and in love.
Hey guys! I’m so sorry that posting has been so off. Both Blue and I have just been swamped as of late. I’ve doubled up on my college courses so I’ll be finished with school in March and last weekend I was in Myrtle Beach with my daughter and fiancé. Anyways it’s been busy, but I’m back to review a small little fic that I’ve actually been meaning to read for a while: Grenadine Sunshine by objectlesson.

I have heard wonderful things about objectlesson and their Xfactor era fics, but I just never got around to reading any of their work. I am so glad that I finally did because I finished this fic in an hour and I’m still all messed up and sparkly over it. I’ve just been in the mood to read xfactor era lately and I certainly made the right choice by delving into Grenadine Sunshine.
Listen, one of my ultimate headcanons is Louis just being knocked on his ass by Harry. Like just completely obsessed and fucking head over heels for him. Objectlesson certainly delivered on that headcanon and made it even better than I could have ever imagined. The way they describe Louis first seeing Harry:
“When Louis sees Harry for the first time, before he has his name or knows anything about him, the word that flashes across his mind is beautiful. It’s like lightning streaking across a storm-black sky, sudden and hot and electric, blinding him before it’s gone, replaced with a creeping, distant, hard-to-pin-down sensation fluttering in his chest. It’s not shame, exactly, but maybe something like it.”
You can literally feel Louis being bowled over this description is so good. This type of description is something objectlesson keeps up throughout the story. One of the most important things for me while reading is getting a good look into the narrator’s head and this story receives an A+ for that. The reader is allowed into everything Louis is feeling and I love it. Just how fast and hard Louis falls for Harry is amazing and it’s not presented in a cheesy overly romantic way and I love that as well.

The writing is very honest and real and completely believable. There were no moments where I was cringing because the lines were too big for them. Everything Louis thought and did felt so right because his characterization was so fucking brilliant. It is hard for some authors to nail a good characterization in 50k words objectlesson does it in under 20k. That’s brilliant.
I also loved Louis and Harry’s relationship with typically “feminine” things. Like the makeup that became a huge part of the story and Harry’s blue onesie. I honestly cannot believe objectlesson found a way to make Harry’s blue onesie endearing and attractive – if that’s the right word. The blue onesie was attractive to Louis at least and I find getting that across must have been quite a feat.
I loved how it was Louis that really made Harry comfortable being himself his “true self” as Louis described it. I think back to that radio interview where Louis held Harry’s hands while he had his nails painted and now Harry paints his nails often and I remember why I cry so much. Anyways, I loved that Louis always made Harry feel very pretty and made sure Harry knew that it wasn’t weird to like makeup and pretty things.
I feel like from the moment Louis first talked to Harry I was screaming “kiss him kiss him kiss him” so the way that the kiss finally came about was perfect as well. There was this insane build up in the story where all of their interactions just get more and more tense and I think objectlesson did an amazing job of balancing that tension and cutting it at the perfect time.
ALSO. About this kiss. Objectlesson does something so simple but so mind blowing I was literally shook. So when Louis is kissing Hannah he keeps his hand palm down on his leg because he has no instinct to touch her. Okay fast forward to when Louis is kissing Harry and he “gets a hand in the neck of the purple hoodie” and “he can feel Harry’s heart beating in his throat where one of his pinkie fingers is resting.” Like I was just in awe of this writing because objectlesson doesn’t come out and explicitly say “Louis likes kissing Harry more than he likes kissing Hannah,” they show you that he does. Louis responds immediately to this kiss. I don’t know I thought that was just really clever and I loved it so much.
Okay and the question that Harry asked at the end was so perfect? Harry wasn’t living in Louis’ head like we were so he didn’t understand Louis’ motivations and I just thought Harry asking for clarification was so spot on and important. Miscommunication? Harry doesn’t know them. Both Harry and Louis were the perfect amount of confident and insecure and I loved it. Objectlesson did an amazing job of characterizing them as teenagers and giving them the thoughts and actions and flaws of teenagers.
There really is not enough I can say about this story – just read it immediately.

Enter Louis, one of Hollywood's biggest actors himself, who just came out of the closet and taps new genres in the industry. When Louis sacks the role Harry auditioned for in Scorsese's next big film, their irrational feud starts. Who could have guessed it would get even worse when for promo season, their teams decide to present them as a couple for publicity?
In short, Harry's in love with someone and doesn't care about dating anyone else, Louis never felt home in L.A., Liam writes love songs for someone he shouldn't write love songs to, and Niall makes everything better with good food.
Green’s Summary: Louis and Harry are both actors. They’re both really good actors. Except that Louis has starred in more comedic roles while Harry has done more serious roles. So enter Louis with something to prove and a little bit of a chip on his shoulder and Harry an actor that’s been on the scene a little longer and is kind of bitter about not landing the lead role against Louis. So they hate each other until they don’t.

Green’s Review: This is me, Green doing a review over a fic by green_feelings, and let me tell you I had a lot of feelings. Green ones. That is terribly cheesy. Ignore it. Anyways, if you have been in the Larry fandom for a couple years then you’ll definitely know green_feelings. She’s the author of great Larry fic classics like Empty Skies, Jump Before We Fall, and Nameless Night (which I hear might be getting a sequel and I’m super pumped for that). I have read everything that this author has put out and I have to agree that she is one of the most talented writers within our fandom. She is also incredibly sweet and patient with her fans - you should visit her on her blog because she is really sweet. She even helped us get our blog out there. Basically Bee Buddy Reviews is a major stan of Shai/green_feelings.
The first fic I read by green_feelings was Nameless Night and that fic chewed me up and spit me out. Honestly, I read it when it was still being updated and every time I got an alert I was like damn I wonder how messed up I’ll be after this chapter? Green_feelings is just really good at conveying emotion and angst in a believable way. And she continues this talent in Paint Me in a Million Dreams. Paint Me in A Million Dreams is a fresh new way to deliver the “enemies to lovers” trope. Which also happens to me one of my favorite tropes, so I was always a big fan of this fic. The thing I loved about this fic is that the reader gets to understand that both Louis and Harry are really great people so anytime one of them is talking bad about the other you’re like “no listen he’s really great.” I loved Harry and Louis pretty equally and was constantly wanting the best for both of them. That never really happens for me in fic because I am a huge harrie so I am usually biased in fics, but not this one.
I loved the interactions between Harry and Louis even when they’re fighting. Hate is just as passionate a feeling as love so, it made sense that they would feel so strongly about each other from the very beginning even if they were confusing those feelings for negative ones. One of my favorite scenes is when Louis shows up unexpectedly at Harry’s house where Harry is entertaining Luke and eventually Louis and Harry just get left alone - of course. And even that early into the story you know they’re falling for each other but green_feelings just makes it so subtle. Like Harry being kind of taken aback about having Louis snuggled up to him but he doesn’t realize why.
Another big part of this fic is miscommunication. Which I normally cannot do. Because it’s so easy to solve if you just sit down and have a five minute conversation. Fortunately, this offered enough communication to balance out what wasn’t being talked about. Harry and Louis were constantly making strides in the right direction for their relationship so even though their miscommunication was frustrating it made sense with the story and I really enjoyed watching them slowly open up to one another. I squealed out loud when Louis realized Harry had every single one of his movies. I loved that green_feelings included that part.
This fic was just brilliantly written and so fun even with all of the angst. I really enjoyed it and I cannot wait for the next fic that green_feelings begins working on.
Before I go I wanted to address something that really bothers me about this fandom and fic in general. The day the final chapter came out green_feelings received a lot of flak because Harry and Louis didn’t have penetrative sex. This reaction is common in this fandom. I know Blue and I have both been wary about releasing fic because neither of us write smut. Now I am not saying that a fic shouldn’t have smut, but I am saying there is no fanfiction out there that needs it. Writing smut is purely up to the author and their comfort level and the direction in which they want to take their story. The fact that people feel entitled to a sex scene is just kind of gross and uncalled for. I remember this same discourse happening with Young & Beautiful and just feeling completely shocked at the comments people would make because the fic didn’t have a sex scene. It is truly unbelievable to me. Paint Me in a Million Dreams was 110,000 words of amazing and talented work. And it should not be reduced to “oh well they didn’t have sex.”
Would You Recommend it to Blue?: Yes. I would. I think it’s really well written and very cute and I think Blue would enjoy it.

Green’s Summary: Louis lives in a small town where everyone knows everyone - and everything. When someone begins murdering tourists, the small town garners more attention from police and journalists than they want – or need. Harry, a journalist, visits the town to investigate and write about the ongoing murders. Harry ends up becoming more involved in the investigation than he ever bargained for because of his history with Louis.
Review Under The Cut
If you have been in the fandom for a while – and you read fic – then you’ll know Whimsicule as the author of Dead of July. Dead of July is an amazing work of fiction that features Harry as Captain America and Louis as the Winter Soldier. One of my favorite things about Dead of July was the growth that Whimsicule exhibited from the first chapter to the last. You could see her shaping her writing and applying new things and it was brilliant. I really admire her dedication to long fanfictions that have a lot of character growth. Not everyone can pull that off, because it takes many paragraphs dedicated to the character’s thoughts and actions. You can’t steamroll everything with dialogue, the character has to go through phases. Whimsicule delivers this growth in a seemingly effortless and incredibly realistic way.
So I knew of Whimsicule when I started Black with Autumn Rain, and I am completely blown away. I literally finished the last pages at work because I could not wait until I got home to find out what happened. There is a reason this fic is so highly recommended. It is a truly amazing read and once I got to the exciting bits, I could not stop reading. I was pushing the limits of my ability to get my daughter and myself ready in enough time to be on time for work for three days straight. I will be honest and say that I did from some parts of the beginning very slow, but the story definitely picks up when Harry stumbles his way into it.
I have never read a murder mystery fic and I honestly believed I would not like to read a fic of that genre, but this fic delivers the murder mystery in a fresh way. The murders are not the most mysterious thing about the small town. I loved getting small pieces of the bigger picture in every chapter. It really felt like clues were revealed when they needed to be. Whimsicule knows when to keep you guessing and when to throw you a bone. When I realized that there was more going on than just murders I really tried to pay attention to every detail and map out on my own what I thought was happening. I was nowhere close to being on the right track. If you figured out the twist before it was revealed I need you to come talk to me because how did you see that coming? I am still speechless about the whole thing honestly. The twist is huge but when you get there, it makes so much sense! How did Whimsicule manage to create this fantasy world in a way where something like that just has you nodding your head and thinking man, I should have seen that sooner?
Louis, I could gush forever about this characterization of Louis. I wanted to hug him and tell him that he’d figure out what was going on soon enough, and I wanted to make him stop putting the blame for everything on himself. I think Louis is a vulnerable character that also exudes so much bravery and strength. You are constantly rooting for him, constantly wanting him to win, and wanting him to feel like he belongs. He had so much responsibility thrust on him from such an early age and he deserved a happy ending where he could make peace with himself and his decisions.
I love that both Harry and Louis were such likeable characters. Even when they were wrong, you still rooted for them. That speaks a lot for what Whimsicule is able to do with her character’s, they are three-dimensional characters – with believable and realistic flaws. I loved Harry and I loved that his character was still strong and complex even when most of this story was delivered from Louis point of view. I loved how dedicated he was to helping Louis – not just to their relationship, but helping Louis figure out what was happening in the town and helping Louis figure out his role in all of it.
The minor characters are also very well written. Liam is a solid presence that is central to Louis’ character. Karen and Geoff are the warm parental figures the story needed, and I don’t think it would have as much heart if not for them. I loved how the author worked in Zayn and Niall. Zayn had no lines but I was still so excited to see him included in a fic. And can we talk about Puck? Puck is a national treasure honestly. He is honestly one of the most endearing pets I have ever read and his knowledge of Louis and when he needed affection just melted me.
This is a long review, but I could talk about this fic for hours. Whimsicule has this ability to make her writing really quiet. I would get so lost in the story and when I came out of it the world was too loud. The beginning of the story felt like the calm before the storm and then it got progressively louder as you figured out what was happening and why it was happening until you reached the climax of the story and her writing was practically screaming. It is an amazing quality to have as a writer and I was in complete awe in her delivery of every single scene of this fic.
I think she ended this fic in a nice way. It wraps up all the mystery and leaves you with less questions than when you started the fic and that’s important. I have a couple questions still, but nothing that’s going to haunt me, and I would list them if they weren’t spoilers. If Whimiscule reads this and wants to help a very curious reader out – I really would not mind a nice long chat. ☺ Also, the cigarette smoking scene. I was torn between screaming about them possibly getting hot ashes on each other and screaming about how I’ll never be able to think of a cigarette the same. I’m not going to spoil anything but wow.
Would you recommend this fic to Blue: I am a horrible person. Honestly, I told Blue the twist. I would still recommend it to her because it is so well written and because Whimsicule is able to back up every risk she takes and I really need someone to talk about this fic with. I think the fic is still good even knowing the twist. Whimiscule delivers an incredible array of emotion and provides so much insight into her characters; it feels as if they have been long time friends of hers.
I would recommend this fic to everyone and anyone, as long as they did not have an issue with minor gore. Please give this fic a shot if you have not read it. Green’s Review: This fanfiction begins with the election of Harvey Milk and itt features an honest portrayal of the attitudes of that period. Louis is a closeted high school soccer player, Harry is new to town, and the two of them form a quick bond. Full review under the cut.
Fondleeds has written a few other fics for the Louis/Harry fandom including, I Could Dream All Night and a Rhythm in Rush. She is a diverse author with an incredible ability to depict and incite emotion and she continued this ability in Here in the Afterglow.
Here in the Afterglow is a shining star in a sea of Louis/Harry fanfiction. It captures your attention from the first sentence and does not let it go for three chapters. Fondleeds presents the issue of homophobia in the 1970’s in a raw and honest way. She creates characters that inspire anger, but also hope because you want to see them rise above their prejudices. The title is a great homage to the end of the fic when everything seems to fall into place for these two boys. They do get to sit in the afterglow of their experiences.
Here in the Afterglow is around 88,000 words. It is not an incredibly lengthy fic and yet it achieves just as much, if not more, as you would expect from a 150,000-word fic. Fondleeds manages to create well-rounded characters with understandable motives and a lot of depth. The characters are not just the villains and the good guys – there is much more to every single one of them. Louis is charismatic, as usual, and incredibly loyal to his friends and to his mom. He internalizes most of his struggles and wants to make everyone happy even if that is impeding his own happiness. Harry is a loveable and genuine kid who you begin rooting for as soon as he steps into the story. He and Louis together is something truly beautiful. They become best friends before anything else, care for each other deeply, and offer copious amounts of support to one another. This portrayal of them is one of the most vulnerable I have ever read and I wanted more than anything for them to have their happy ending.
Some villains of the story are Stan – it was interesting to see him in this light, Harry’s mother – who is not Anne, and Jimmy – an actual piece of trash. Stan’s character was very hard for me to reconcile with. He was the character I was rooting for and sadly, he does end up disappointing you. Harry’s mother, Lisa, is another character that I was hoping would surprise me and I think there is hope for her later. A few years past when this story ends, I think she could end up surprising them. In this story I was glad she wasn’t Anne and I think that was a perfect decision on the author’s part because I could never see Anne pulling half of what Lisa did.
Jimmy was always the bad guy and I am glad he got what was coming to him. One of the most powerful moments of the fic for me was when Louis enacted a little revenge on Jimmy. “I came back,” it actually sent chills down my spine and I fist pumped the air. I don’t know if I have ever been as proud of a fictional character as I was of Louis in that moment. I won’t spoil anything for the readers but it was a moving and beautiful moment.
One of my favorite types of fic is slow burn. I literally live and breathe for good slow burn fics. I’m pretty picky though, and I have a limit for how long the “slow burn” portion of the fic can last before it just becomes ridiculous. Here in the Afterglow was the perfect amount of build-up. The pacing was so solid throughout the entire story. No part of Harry and Louis’ relationship seemed rushed or too slow. It was the perfect amount of time between every stage of their relationship. AND THE TENSION. Jesus. It was brilliant. Honestly. I’ll include one of my favorite parts of the fic here, warnings for recreational drug use:
“Fuck, that’s smooth,” Louis says as he exhales, following Harry and leaning back against the tree.
Harry giggles, and his cheek is almost mushed up against the trunk, eyes bright. “Thought you didn’t do ‘this’ a lot.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Louis inhales again, sticky and sweet. When he exhales, lips wet, he catches
Harry’s eyes. They’re dark in the hazy light. “Doesn’t mean I don’t know what’s good and what’s shit.”
“I like your mouth,” Harry says suddenly, and Louis blinks, pulling back.
“What?” He says, too sharp, too bitter.
“I like the way you talk,” Harry says, lips quirking. “I like your words.”
“You don’t even know me,” Louis says. Harry holds his hand out and Louis passes the joint over, careful not to brush their skin together.
“I want to,” Harry says. “Gotta make friends, don’t I?”
“I suppose,” Louis says indifferently.
“Everyone else is…dull,” Harry says with a wave of his hand, like he’s explaining some great revelation.
“Oh?” Louis splutters a laugh. “We’re a dull bunch are we, down in Post Falls?”
“Everyone else,” Harry repeats with a purposed smile.
Their chemistry is so tangible and brilliant, even in this short preview. Their ability to work off each other just continues to improve as the story goes on. These two characters were perfectly crafted for each other. Here is another quote from a point in the story that I was very excited to get to:
But then Harry lifts a hand, his smooth, delicate hand, and runs a long finger down Louis’ cheek, coming to rest just by the hinge of his jaw. Louis stutters out a breath, gravitating closer, his eyes threatening to flutter closed as Harry touches him.
Harry rests their foreheads together gently, his thumb coming to rub at his jaw, his hand cupping the back of his neck and head. Louis’ body is covered in goosebumps, every inch of him shaking like a leaf, so nervous, so unused to this sort of touch.
I am completely here for characters being soft with each other and Louis and Harry are so incredibly soft in this scene. I think it was the perfect way for them to reach this point of their story.
Another thing I appreciated about this fic was that they bonded over great music as well. The author clearly did a lot of background research on the artists and the albums of that time and it was an amazing addition to her storytelling.
The only thing I have to say I was unsure of in this fic were the parallels between Harry’s back-story and Louis coming into himself. I do understand the reason the author took it into that territory but I’m not 100% behind it. I think she portrayed both of the instances perfectly and was able to get the desperation and hurt across amazingly, but it just didn’t completely work for me. Still, I understand the decision and I still support this beautiful fic. I recommend it to anyone in the fandom who needs a fresh story that is very well written and has well-rounded, compelling characters.
Finally, would you recommend it to Blue: Blue loves her fluff fic. She reads angst but it is usually per my suggestion – except for the Sweet Home Alabama fic, which she forced on me. However, she also loves fics that are well written and I know she would love this portrayal of Louis and Harry. Therefore, yes I would recommend it to her and warn her that the fic is a lot of angst but it’s not pointless and it does end. The ending is very happy and full of hope.

Review: “Rabbit’s Gift” by George Shannon and Illustrated by Laura Dronzek

Rabbit’s Gift is a picture book by George Shannon and illustrated Laura Dronzek. It is an adaptation of a folktale that can be found in Chinese, Japanese, French, and Spanish retellings. The story of the book is that Rabbit has been gathering food and has extra. He thinks that his friend Donkey could use it so he brings it to where Donkey lives, but Donkey wasn’t home so he leaves it there. Donkey comes upon the turnip and then delivers it to Goat’s home, who drops it off at Deer’s place, which completes the unknown circle by placing it in front of Rabbit’s home. Rabbit finds the turnip again and is surprised and then brings all of the animals together to share the turnip. The book has beautiful art that features Chinese characters of each animal on the border. The last page has all the characters again with their definitions as well as a short explanation about the folktale. Shannon has adapted a story that has been found in many cultures and variations that teaches the simple moral of sharing and thinking about others.
The book can be used as a tool to aide in the development of a child’s social and moral skills. The book encourages children to share with their friends and think about their needs once their own are met. I think it’s a nuanced understanding of sharing that is important to teach children and parents. A child is being taught that they can and should share when they have extra and when they are able to. Sharing is not being forced nor is it harming one to share with another. The book also encourages the notion of doing something without expecting a reward. Rabbit and the other animals think of their friend, bring the turnip to where they live, leave it there, and the snow hides their tracks. Children are often rewarded or scolded for behaviours and will act to receive attention; it’s important for them to see positive actions being done without reward to encourage that in the child as when they grow up they will not be rewarded for every good action.
Rabbit’s Gift is a great book for children ages 3-5. Parents and educators can frame the telling of the story around a theme such as sharing or friendship but can also use it around certain times of year like Thanksgiving or Christmas. Or it can be used when discussing other cultures and/or folktales because of the roots of the story. An extension activity that one could use would be to bring in stuffed animals of each animal and allow children to facilitate the story with props. This could lead into a larger discussion of sharing and good deeds and allow children to relate the story and action of sharing to their own lives. Another could be to teach the children how to write out the Chinese symbols.

“Purr” by Alison Lester is a first book that teaches children the names and sounds of animals that are common pets. Each two page spread has a beautiful watercolour painting of an animal with accompanying text that describes something about it and then has the sound the animal makes. It is unique in that it teaches the reader about animals commonly kept as pets. The choice of common domesticated animals makes the book more accessible to youger children as they are much more recognizable. The book may start conversations based on the familiarity of these animals. If the child doesn’t have a pet this can encourage a familiarity with animals, and possibly open them to the concept and make them more comfortable as children that do not grow up with pets can be more timid and shy around animals
On the inside front and back cover there is a collage of paintings of animals in the book but also other animals not in the story. These pages can be used for questions before or after the story is read. For example, you can ask a child to point out a specific animal, ask them to point or say their favourite animal, or point to each animal and ask what sound they make which can all reinforce vocabulary skills and an expressive vocabulary.
