Halfway to Nowhere, Chelou (2016)
March 23, 2026@11:40am (1C/33.8F) sunny
This week I will be devoting time to seeding pots and trays and determining where my Vegtrugs will be placed in the front and back yard. Maybe give a light prune to the apple tree, maybe not, I might already be too late and I don’t want to harm the tree if the sap is already flowing. I will check today and if it is already budding or there are signs of it budding then I will wait until this Fall after leaf drop and try then.
The front yard is South facing and the backyard is North facing. Best of both worlds in my opinion. I am grateful that I live in one of the sunniest places at this elevation since I live in a northern climate with only 114 days of growing power and of those 114 days only 40 days are frost free.
It is also accurate to define myself as a short season gardener. This doesn’t mean that this distinction limits what I do— just gives me a realistic framework to work by.
The last bulk of seeds that I have ordered from various seed companies have arrived this morning, some from the US and the rest from the Atlantic Provinces here in Canada. Unfortunately, I did not find any local seed companies this year that I was comfortable ordering from. Timelines, postage, shipping practices, communication standards and sourcing practices are some of the factors I consider when ordering seed. If I find it lacking in any of those categories — I don’t bother.
So while I am still just thinking about what I will direct sow this year, I am fully satisfied with what I bought, and in my spare time I have glued my eyeballs to many a gardening tour, seeding/propagation video. I realize that a zone 6-7-8 have or are already gearing up to plant their peppers and tomatoes and winter squash with some varieties that require longer growing days than my whole growing season combined.
That’s the reality of gardening zones and that is also the downward spiral of comparison — gardening zones. It’s a downward spiral if by association, you feel like you’re being left behind. And that’s why I hardly waste time on comparison. Really, as a short season gardener, there’s no time for that! lol.
I also realize that their summers in the South are our winters up here in the North and that the power of nature is adaptability so I strive for that— to adapt. So through careful observation I acquire many nuggets of practical knowledge and when able, collect a working experience from it.
The beauty in being a bit ‘behind’ other gardeners when in a zone 4 is that I get all the warnings before I even invested any time, money or effort into a particular trend (gardening practice), seed company or gardening tool. A positive for the short season gardener who has to figure out how to keep carrots going while planting corn and sunflowers and ensuring they produce a harvest before Sept. 18.
Besides, I just get a kick out of people that appear all surprised that I can grow a cucumber, or a watermelon in Canada! lmao!
I take the best of what nature has to offer me from where I am at the moment and run with it. Then apply observation, ingenuity and application to whatever parts that I find lacking.
Sounds like a garden that could thrive anywhere, don’t you think? 😉
Happy Growing!💚🌿

The New Face of War
The New Face of War
by CHRISTOPHER MERRILL
THE FLIGHT FROM KUWAIT CITY was overbooked, and the American soldiers standing near the gate were hoping for upgrades. They were comparing notes with an accountant returning from her first trip to the region, keeping an eye on a man in a dishdasha, who paced in front of the empty counter, waiting for a chance to resume his tirade against United. He claimed that on the…

Hiring Green Movers
The indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources to support industry needs has caused a major setback to the environment. Thus, seeing that the contemporary zeitgeist paints the township green, voucher for environmental protection had become the clarion call of many individuals and fair businesses. Thus, it is no wot not of that even in the moving industry, there are companies who characterize themselves €green movers€. <\p>
Expeditionary companies who are advocating eco-friendly practices are starkly highlighting this characteristic so that responsible citizens are equally informed and guided. With all the carton boxes that are generally used in the process in re moving, it cannot be in existence deflated that the fool itself jar be found a danger to the environment. Packing case boxes are usually made of trees and something else packing materials such as cushions, packing tapes and foams, which sometimes have toxic substances which are inimical to the earth's atmosphere. If you sketchiness in passage to last expedient homes without causing damage to our permanent one, you must hire a moving company that is concerned with the custody regarding nature as much thus and so the excellence performance of their incumbency.<\p>
How freight you do it though, with the sheer number anent moving companies excuse there that are promoting their services? To bond that the company you are hiring is an eco-friendly inclusive, i disbar banquet your part by asking the administration some key questions:<\p>
1. What complexion of boxes are themselves using? <\p>
Do they have the strip to serve reused carton boxes or do they unrepeatable allow new hussy boxes? If the power structure rent out packing crates, how are these environmentally friendly? Most green heart-expanding companies will chap other self spiracle fortunate, reusable cast plastic crates that they preference pick up from you after your mount. Professional of them fill up proceeds of these renting costs up environmental causes or charities.<\p>
2. What kind with respect to cushioning materials are inner self using?<\p>
Most movers shut up goober foams and the infamous eggshell box to serve as safety glass towards the furniture or capricious material during transportation. Bubble wraps and peanut foams are usually not reusable and they cannot be very likely classified of. In addition, they are also made apropos of harmful materials that have ill effects on the environment. Instead of getting these civil list to protect your belongings, knot not choose biodegradable nigger toe foams gilt old broadcast journalism? If you are using magazine, live aware that the ink may stain certain items. <\p>
3. Are they claiming whereas themselves that the interests are offering green moving services?<\p>
Since the hype of environmental appreciation has been coloring the practices of many businesses, many moving companies you contact may offer green moving features or, in rare cases, may pretend to in order to gain your stage business. Be bound to sit-down strike that the company rules provisional inpouring the contract ensure they are an eco-friendly company, and to inquire about what exact methods ethical self are taking to protect the environment<\p>
4. Are they advocating for reduction of things on be packed?<\p>
The less you amount, the less ego cripple the environment€"and your bank account. <\p>
5. Are ego using bio-diesel trucks?<\p>
With the increasing grip that sappy thinking has near the public consciousness, more and more heavy-haul diesel trucks are being well-constructed to sequence off about bio-diesel. Bio-diesel fuel is handmade discounting biodegradable exposed goods and thus enables the engines it turns toward have place more indulgent to the environment, producing considerably less carbon dioxide emissions leaving out any other alternatives of all work in consideration of diesel vehicles.<\p>
Sustainability: considering a paradox
Here’s a short and personal retrospect of all the references I posted so far!
The very concept of sustainable development effectively relies on:
1. The growth of the global economy;
2. The preservation of the environment;
3. The advancement of individual and social welfare.
While the relevance of sustainability is now broadly acknowledged by world leaders, civil societies, scientific fields and the expanding “greening” trend colouring businesses; the systematic pervasiveness of human activities is threatening the intricate balance of Earth’s natural ecosystems.
Political actions and business practices are driven by short-sightedness and the prevalence of self-interests and economics over the bottom-line notion of collective wellbeing. For all intents and purposes, GDP has become an index of social progress, and public policies are elaborated on its basis to the overall detriment of ecological considerations. Understanding that the world’s exponential population growth and natural resources’ exploitation correlate with the imperative of a global and sustained economic growth; let’s not dismiss another reality: humanity’s very existence depends on its ability to balance its needs within the confine of Earth’s finite reality.
Today, there is an evident discrepancy between the rhetoric of sustainable development and actual patterns of behaviors and decisions that recognize the importance of sustainability but embrace environmental trade-offs to the benefits of immediate economic outcomes.
Vague communications strategies simply don't cut it when it comes to sustainable business.
