It was a mistake to decentralize Grace at the end of Requiem. The narrative weight was lost when we spent so much time as Leon without cycling back to Grace in any significant way. She should have fought the final boss, she should have gotten Requiem again, and she should have been allowed a bit more of an active role in the final scenes aside from tackling Elpis.

Ah! I forgot to answer this! Okay, time for a list:

1. Is writing cathartic or stressful for you?

It's been both, on occasion. I still write when I'm stressed, though I should say the fic process isn't usually what stresses me. Just real life stuff that gets in the way.

Hand in Hand has been a good catharsis to that actually!

3. Do you have any upcoming WIPs? How far along are you with them?

I sure do! Once Hand in Hand is done, I have an intermission WIP almost ready for posting, from Ivan's perspective, waiting for the Darkling and the shared braincell duo to come back. I also have Part 2 in the works, with most chapters already drafted. Not written, drafted, lol.

(I should also say I have a million Witcher WIPs. For Emhyralt, for my Geraskier vampire fic... but I'll get to it when I get to it 😅)

9. Are there any fics you'd love to see but don't want to write yourself? What are they?

The 50 Malarklina ideas that exist in my brain but that I do not have the energy to write. 😔 Short fics about them being happy or flirty, or with King and Queen Darklina/Mal endgame. I would LOVE more of those. And more Darkling/Mal fics. Of any flavor.

17. What has been the proudest moment for you so far since you started writing?

This one is hard to pin down. I've had many proud moments over this last year. Having a fic pass the 10k kudos mark on ao3. Posting over 100k words in a year. Joining fandom challenges and actually finishing them. Coming back to art after many years of hiatus.

Maybe my proudest right now will be finishing a fic with multiple chapters (manifesting Hand in Hand's conclusion into existence before it's done, lol). I don't believe I've ever finished a chaptered fic before. Not for longer than 5 chapters. It would really be an achievement for me, and a great step forward in how I approach writing serial fics. Hell, it's great for my own personal writing!

12. Why did you choose to write [Hand in Hand in Unlovable Hand]? How long have you been working on it?

Hand in Hand owes its existence to the show actively putting Mal and the Darkling in a single room (more than once) and having them talk like jealous little idiots in love with Alina. Boys, why fight when you could both be holding Alina's hands as a chaotic throuple? Why don't the two of you hold each other's hands for a bit and cool off?

I had read the trilogy books years ago. Loved the Grishaverse to bits. Loved the Darkling to bits. Never gave me any fic ideas then. I just passively consumed the books with occasional Big Sads and What Ifs. And then Netflix gave us their gem of an adaptation and suddenly, at the end of the season, knowing where things were going to eventually end, I thought, "It isn't fair," which is a fanfic writer's greatest motivator. We're handyman fixing this plot so everyone ends up together. That's the goal in Hand in Hand's series. Malarklina happy endgame!!

So I've been working on it since the show came out. I can't say exactly when the idea struck me, but point-five seconds after it did, I booted up my docs and wrote the first chapter to this fic. No second thoughts. Just fingers to the keyboard.

I'm really tempted to say it's that scene, it's one of my favorites and I'm so proud of it.

But TLOCC came to be because of this exchange:

"That's why you spared me?" said Tom scornfully. "To absolve me of my sins?"

"I can't give you absolution, Riddle," said Smith carefully. "That's not up to me."

"Then what is this? Pre-emptive redemption?"

Smith's lips curved into a mirthless smile. "I don't believe in redemption. The way I see it, there's only the choices we make and how we're bound by them . . .”

I'd read/seen a lot of bad redemption stories at the time, and I was falling out of love with the trope because of how the idea of ~redemption~ was being carelessly thrown around in a lot of fandoms. Which is . . . another rant for another time lol

But it led to this idea to do a redemption fic that isn't a redemption fic, where no one believes in it and it's not the end goal. What the characters do believe in is change, and that’s what they strive for. But having the capacity to change, choosing to change — that doesn't necessitate goodness.

So . . . yeah. TLOCC kind of started out as a spitefic hahaha

How I feel about this character:

Oh my god dude. Oh my god you don't even know. He makes me crazy. he makes me sick. He's so sweet and kind and silly and he's also so so traumatized but he stays optimistic and hope filled ANYWAY, he's adorable, he's hot, I want to squish him, I want him obliterated, I want him kissed, he gives me cuteness aggression, if I think about him for too long my brain overheats and leaks out my ears and I can't form coherent thoughts. I LOVE EEFAN.

AKJFHDSKJFH okay I do think he's had valid relationships in his past but I'm personally Not Interested in those relationships. Benji x Ethan gives me so much life. They're soulmates. They save the world together. They complete eachother. Their weaknesses are each others' strengths. They would kill and die for eachother. what more do you need

My non-romantic OTP with this character:

LUTHER STICKELL. THEY'RE QPPS TO ME. THEY LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH IT CHANGES THE COURSE OF THE NARRATIVE. Also I lied earlier I love their ship in any form aksjdfhskjf. Luther and Ethan friendship 5 ever.

My unpopular opinion about this character:

I've mentioned it in a long post/analysis before but I don't think he hates his life!! I think his life has caused him trauma and trouble and strife, and being a spy is so difficult in so many ways, but I do believe in my heart of hearts that he loves saving people. He loves keeping the world safe, and he loves using his skills to do so. And he loves his friends that he works with!!!!

One thing I wish had happened with this character in canon:

Honestly there's a lot more obvious stuff I could say but I'm blanking and right now I'm just thinking about how much I want him to have had so much more non romantic affection 🥲 He's so traumatized and he loves his friends so much, I know we see him hugging his friends but I want More. I want him to be really intimate with the ones he loves and not just his love interests. Hand holding and cheek kisses and such. I know it's not realistic since he's an action hero but a man can dream.

How I feel about this character:

I LOVE HER!!!! Gosh she was so disrespected by the narrative it makes me SAD!!! She has such potential, she's such a cool thief and a fashionista and an icon and she's GORGEOUS, plus she had the most ICONIC scene in mi2. I love her. She is so so wonderful

JANE CARTER!!! I've already talked about this rarepair that @assignmentimprobable and I cooked up but I wanna talk about it again. I love the idea of Jane Carter the superspy with a badass thief gf, they're butch4femme, they kick ass together, they would kill to protect each other, it's so much FUN

My non-romantic OTP with this character:

Honestly I wanna say Ethan! I want them to remain friends even after they didn't work out romantically. I think they would have a good time doing dangerous stuff together, like rock climbing or stunt driving or scuba diving. Also gossiping.

HER MOVIE IS GOOD!!!! I LOVE HER IN MI2!!!! YES IT'S GOOFY AND SILLY BUT WHAT IS THE POINT OF HATING WHIMSY WHEN WE NEED WHIMSY TO SURVIVE!!!!

One thing I wish had happened with this character in canon:

I WISH SHE STAYED. OH god, this is gonna get me stoned, but one of my deep seated beliefs is that she should have been Ethan's wife in mi3 and not Julia. I KNOW there are Julia fans that would come after me and I'M SORRY but it's just my opinion. we actually got to SEE her and Ethan meet and fall in love, and they're both very skilled and talented individuals, and they have chemistry. I don't ship them, but I ship them more than I ship ethan and julia. I know Thandiwe Newton left because she didn't wanna work with Tom anymore, which I totally respect her for, but if that didn't happen, I would have wanted her to stay.

Thinking about getting into reading Philip K. Dick... Got any recs for stories to start with?

HELLO!!! I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED!!!

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SHORT SCI FI STORIES THAT WILL ALTER YOUR BRAIN CHEMISTRY AND SEAR THEMSELVES INTO YOUR MEMORY!!

The first thing you should know about PKD stories is that a lot of them have SUPER COOL movie adaptations. Ever heard of Minority Report with Tom Cruise? Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger? A Scanner Darkly with Keanu Reeves? Blade Runner with Harrison Ford??

Yeah. A lotta star power there. That's how I started. The thing about PKD is that he doesn't visually describe things very clearly in his stories so they're a little hard to follow if you're not used to his writing style. So if you've seen one of those movies, or multiple, pick your favorite, and read the story that inspired it! (The story for Blade Runner is actually called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and it's his most famous work, so if you haven't seen any of those movies, start by watching Blade Runner and reading DADOES).

Then, once you've got the hang of his style, go crazy, grab whatever book or short story by him that you feel like. There are compilations of his short stories that are really fun to read that you can find in any bookstore. All of his stories are fairly short, but they're incredibly high concept. Very imaginative. Extremely creative. Gives you a glimpse into the mindset of society after WW2 from a sci fi/horror point of view, since he wrote in the 50s-60s.

Oh, and don't forget- if you're enjoying the stories, I'd LOVE for you to post about 'em! the #Philip K Dick tag is incredibly empty and the more people talking about his books and movies, the better!! I'll be posting with you. We'll have so much fun. I promise. Take my hand. Let's go.
