Greenockite
Greenockite is chemically composed of cadmium sulphide (CdS). It was discovered and named in 1840 in Scotland after Lord Greenock. It is a member of the wurtzite group and appears from yellow to red in colour with a hexagonal pyramidal crystal structure. It ranks 3 - 3½ on the Mohs scale of hardness.
It is an uncommon mineral of sulphide deposits and caution should be used when identifying yellow greenockite because its dimorph hawleyite appears in identical environments and has an identical coating. It is also not as rare. Greenockite isn't common enough to mine profitably.
