2. How did you discover your sexuality, tell your story?

alright, so. i spent the first seventeen years of my life thinking i was straight. i had crushes on boys, and while i didn’t feel comfortable with my family’s refusal to support the right to same-sex marriage (and later, trans and nb rights), nobody was violently or outrageously homophobic by straight people standards and i parroted the beliefs like a good child. and then everything changed when the fire nation attacked i was seventeen, sitting across from one of my friends in reggie (which i guess is kind of like homeroom?) – i wondered what would happen if i just leaned across the table and kissed her.

naturally, being a Good Christian Girl, i repressed the shit out of it. by some stroke of cosmic luck, the web series carmilla started airing around the same time, and i binged most of the series a few weeks before the season 1 finale. that was my real gateway into the community, and knowing that there were lesbians and bi women out there. i spent several years after that in a fairly socially isolated place (not by design or choice, really) and for a while i thought i might be ace or demi just because i’d never had a boyfriend. i eventually realised that yes, i did experience sexual attraction even thought it had been a while since the last time, and that i shared that attraction to girls. it was just over two years ago in april when i got the courage to say the words ‘i’m bisexual’ to myself, and i’m so happy i’ve figured myself out.

18. What is your favourite lgbt+ book?

i haven’t read a lot of lgbt/queer literature sadly! the first modern lgbt book i read was skylarks, by karen gregory, which captured my heart for being f/f, set in britain, and about social justice movements which directly affect a wide variety of the population. i also adored radio silence by alice oseman (it’s so good!!! please read if you haven’t you guys!!) and of course, the Big Two, the miseducation of cameron post, and simon vs the homo sapiens agenda

20. Your Favorite lgbt+ movie or show?

so carmilla holds a special place in my heart for being one of the first (glee also holds a similar place in my heart. it’s cringey and awful now, but some parts??? literally groundbreaking. i can still remember the klaine kiss – it was the first gay kiss i ever saw), and sense8 s1/christmas special does too (i haven’t watched the rest yet bc i share a netflix account with my mum and, well, closeted). and honestly i think one of my new favourites is god’s own country – it’s a film, on netflix, about a gay sheep farmer in yorkshire falling in love with a romanian immigrant who comes to help him work his father’s farm, based on the director’s own experiences, and it is unbelievably tender and heartfelt and just – the cinematography is beautiful

Belle bit her lip hard. "I—I was just…i-it was only a character study," she stammered, leaning back and wringing her hands in her apron where she stood. "I thought it might help me develop my skill if I…I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you, I d-didn't expect you to—"

"I'm not offended," he said quietly, and Belle could tell he was sincere. He continued to stare at the portrait, a small smile growing over his face before he looked back up at her. "Do you really think I would have looked like that?"
