I had a go at making headcanons for these. Read under the cut for descriptions and explanations for the different charms and the rows/columns they are located at. (with images! wow so professional)
Aranea's exposition just in case you need to brush up on what we know to be canon: first exposition & the "uninterrupted" reposted one
The main idea that we get is that leprechaun romance is mostly "esta8lished in mutual chicanery, such as the exchange of pranks, coy riddles, slapstick shenanigans, and games of chance". We also know that "a relationship may 8e defined 8y multiple charms at once", and that although "no charm is specifically tied to procre8tion", "certain charm com8in8tions are known to 8e more conducive to fertility than others".
I spent a long time researching the lore on traditional symbols for luck and whatnot, so I'm pretty satisfied with the end result. (I also totally definitely did not go to the lengths of visiting the Lucky Charms website, but if I had, I would be able to tell you that it was a complete waste of time.)
With this small amount of information I've devised a chart very similar to the troll romance quadrants, where each row and column defines the charms in it. I'll first explain those, and then the individual charms.
The rows and columns
Top row: base
These charms determine the nature of the relationship between two leprechauns. They are not more common than any other, but they do provide a general feel to a relationship. Some are easier to combine with certain charms than others. These do not necessarilly involve pranks or riddles, but when combined with other charms they can drastically alter their nature.
Middle row: amity
Leprechauns in these charms find themselves on the same side of conflict, pranks or otherwise. Be it on the giving or the receiving end.
Bottom row: enmity
In contrast, enmity charms define relationships of antagonism. These can range from aggessive pranks to playful riddle matches.
Left column: parity
Leprechauns in these relationships find themselves at an equal level in terms of superiority and/or respect.
Middle column: reversible
Rather than either part having a definitive role, these charms are not defined by that and are more variable depending on each individual pairing.
Right column: imparity
These charms define unequal relationships, where one individual may have the upper hand over the other or more authority.
The charms
HEART CHARM (base, parity)
Corresponds to human romantic love.
As Aranea explains, it is the only charm analogous to any kind of troll or human romance.
MOON CHARM (base, reversible)
This charm is characterised by secrecy and anonymity. Both leprechauns present an interest in each other, often defined by other charms, but it is not expressly confronted. Sometimes one or both don't even know who the other is.
It is a difficult charm to maintain since it easily fades away or changes to another, but it can sometimes last for a long time.
It settles easily into a star charm as soon as one of the parties looses interest.
One of the least concupiscent charms.
Lore: The moon has always been a symbol for the mysterious and shifting.
STAR CHARM (base, imparity)
One leprechaun feels admiration for another and looks up to them, whether it is because of their pranking/riddling abilities or something else. I am reluctant to reference the "sempai, notice me!" situation, but that's really just it.
It differs from a crush in the fact that the admiring leprechaun does not necessarily aspire to another charm through it; it can be maintained as an independent charm while both parties are content.
The admiring leprechaun will often play pranks on the other, who may or may not react to his advances.
If he did, the charm would be susceptible of changing into a moon charm, or even a heart charm or other.
Lore: Wishing upon a star, anyone?
CLOVER CHARM (amity, parity)
Two leprechauns work together to prank/bother others, as a team.
Very easy to combine with other charms, especially amity ones.
DIAMOND CHARM (amity, reversible)
Yes, it is similar to moirallegiance, but due to the nature of leprechaun relationships, its purpose varies slightly. In a diamond charm, one leprechaun provides the other with advice. He makes sure that the latter's shennanigans don't get others or himself into trouble and/or danger, sometimes going to the length of sabotaging his partner's plans.
IRON CHARM (amity, imparity)
In this charm, one individual provides support and/or protection to another who is the target of someone else's schemes.
Lore: The origin of the horseshoe supersticion, where iron was believed to have protective properties against magical folk (leprechauns in particular).
BALOON CHARM (enmity, parity)
Best described as an intense rivalry, both parties of this charm compete with and/or torment each other with pranks, riddles or games.
Depending on the leprechauns involved, it is one of the charms most likely to become dangerous in practice.
Therefore a diamond charm with someone else is a good combination in this case.
RAINBOW CHARM (enmity, reversible)
Comparable to the baloon charm, but completely different in that nature of these games is playful and often harmless. Neither party feels true hostility towards the other and it is more likely to involve teasing than actual resentment.
Easiest out of the enemity charms to combine with amity charms.
Lore: Leprechauns would trick men by telling them about a treasure at the end of the rainbow, which the fools would try to chase. Not particularly malicious, mostly just anoying.
GOLD CHARM (enmity, imparity)
Describes a relationship where one leprechaun harasses the other with pranks, riddles, etc. He constantly has the upper hand and the other barely counters with his own trickery, whether by inability or by choice. The word "bully" comes to mind.
There, done. godDAMN IT that made my head spin
Crushes are entirely possible in all charms. Each charm can also vary in practice from couple to couple, as well as when combined with others.
Charm "chains" are often formed when an individual has various charms with multiple partners. These relationships interact and lead to complex social situations. Finally, remember that a relationship with three or more charms is called a trove!
And now I shall obnoxiously conclude with two of my OTPs as shipping examples.
BYE.
Feel free to reblog or message me with comments or suggestions! uvu It'd be much appreciated.
Charm icons made by me (feel free to use or whatever). I don't know who made the felt sprites since I haven't found a source, but when I do I will edit it in (if you know who made them send a message my way please).
