RIP Greg Hickman ~4/24/93-4/24/09~
I went to school with him until sophomore year of high school, and he will always be missed. <3
This piece of prose was written by another classmate of ours, Chris Diorio, following the news of Greg's death, and I wanted to share it, because it is the most beautiful piece of literature I've ever read.
~
Today, a Man died. It is on this day that the birds will stop singing This night when the moon will cry This dusk when the sun will set With the utmost melancholy The wind will blow not quite as strong The trees will sway not quite as fast The stars will, for a moment, dull Their eternal gleam This day will be the day, The earth halts In remembrance of a grand soul This day will calm the seas And halt the velvet skies Clouds will fade and mourn Sounds will cease to exist All forms of life Will bow their heads And remember Today is the solemn day Today will bring forth Who we really are Whether we can remember our soul Or our humanity Or whether we lost that With our youth Today is the day Where the world shall gather At the black panes Of concrete windows And gaze as one At the newest son of the celestial The youngest star in the night sky And with his rays of light He will warm the limbs of the wind And breathe existence back to our oceans And dry the tears on the cheeks Of those who will someday join him And the sun will rise again And shall play with our hearts And our petty human emotions And we will remember And we will remember That which is gone, is not lost That which has left, is not forgotten That which has slipped from our hands Will always be there to catch us He is the limbs of the wind And he is the breath that moves the ocean Look out yon window And see that he has not left us Rather, he is free from our Mortal Coils And left to return to our paradise Where we rightfully should be He has left us for that Seed of Creation, That Paradise we Lost, He hath found. And forever he will reign Guiding the souls of those close to him. Those who cried on his departure, He will lead by the hand And he will always be there He now sleeps with the Kings And Princes he lived for And he will rejoice with them For finally That burden God had put on his shoulders That cursed yoke It hath been removed from his mortal body And from forth Came a mighty soul Remember that it is those tears you shed That will bring him closer to us Our tears shall drench the natural ground Where our mighty prince lays And comfort him For he knows We need him back We will grant our boy This premature Requiem An unfortunate babe of a gem Its notes are written by his friends Their tears are used for ink And their memories are used for inspiration Their adventures shall make the timing Brisk and upbeat at times Soft and forgiving at others Every laugh shared Every evening spent Every adventure taken Will all be engraved on heartstrung ledgers Crafted with love Immortalized by the mind We will mourn our symphony Into this heavenly sky And with it, our prayers To the youngest star We will bathe in his light, And remember And smile I am the kingly waves Who crash frothy white crowns On a gem-like stage. I am the weathered rocks Standing proud amidst a barrage of force, I should not have to take. I am the lone gull And will see this beach From a perspective none could understand And I am the ancient ocean floor You cannot see me Or appreciate my wonder But I will support you When you happen to lose your footing And forever I will be there for you And I’ll see when you’re lonely My presence will comfort you And wipe your tears He had to be the one For God saw this boy’s spirit And He said “This boy is nigh man, but angel. He is one who is deserving to be by my side” And thus He took him from us And he was welcomed by Him Now, he stands, Surrounded by other pure spirits like his own A giant among saints I, as the author And holder of this pen Look back on these words And think “Will they remember me? Will I be of such noble spirit That strangers will write songs About me? Will tragedy take its players of the stage And will they bow their heads As they did for this man?” And now I know That to fully become the ideal man One must open his spirit to all And achieve Sublimity And Nirvana with himself And he shall treat others with a kindness, Heard of in legend And he shall walk a head taller Than all other men I pray to God And to this young star That I will be able to follow this man’s example And be the light in the lives Of those who are Lost in the dark And so I say farewell To the newest guiding light Lie deep in your slumber And stand tall among saints Today, an angel was born.
Reach up as far as you can and God will help you reach the rest of the way.
