Daniel Cormier presented Greg Hardy with the winning strategy-by asking him to protect the leg kicks of his adversary while reflecting on them.
Former two-weight UFC champion Cormier named the heavyweight battle cage-side at UFC 249, which took place in Florida but in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic behind closed doors.
DC insisted Greg Hardy would test Yorgan De Castro's deadly leg kicks in the first half of the bout.
And the shamed defensive ending of the NFL seemed to take notice as he began to wise up and get out of the way of the attempted leg strikes by De Castro.
In the octagon, Hardy was the busier of the two and outworked De Castro to earn points.
The ex-Dallas Cowboys player announced after receiving the verdict he did indeed listen to Cormier's advice and thanked the heavyweight for unwittingly coaching him to victory.
Hardy stated: "Thank god for not having the crowd, shout out to DC, I heard him tell me to go out and check it and figure out how to check it. So I started to try and check them, so game changer."

The heavyweight fight, which kicked off the US coverage of ESPN's PPV, looked expected to end early as both Hardy and De Castro hurled haymakers.
But heading into De Castro's second round seemed to slow down, as Hardy found some right hands down.
Hardy held the momentum going into the final round as he boxed his way to a point win, despite De Castro later signing that he had sustained a foot injury after the fight.
