Hello. I know you are a certified Nolan odyssey hater but mostly from a mythology perspective but my biggest gripe with the movie is the dialogue is this just a me thing or do you agree? (Please I feel like I’m losing my mind i expected the movie to be historically inaccurate but at least have good dialogue and nobody’s talking about it)

I totally agree! The dialogue was so weird, and my biggest issue was it became so weirdly meta in a way that really took me out of the story, and not in a fun edgy way. I think my personal opinion is that I don’t mind the modern language if it was good, I didn’t expect the movie to be in ancient Greek. But god, some of the lines were so…off? Like modern but not realistic for anyone in any time period to be saying.

having Odysseus not understand greek from the man whose village he raided even though he literally tells that man "we're greeks" is one of the craziest moments in the Odyssey like this isn't just whitewashing this is industrial strength bleach

I AM SO GLAD that people are talking about how the 2026 Odyssey movie is pushing Christian monotheistic standards on Ancient Greek polytheism that is objectively a completely different theological structure

(To preface I am not a Christian but I love learning about theology) no, “Zeus’s law” is not the same as something Christian god would decree. Zeus does not “love” humans the way that Christian god is described to love humans. “God”’s commandments are for the benefit of humans and so they love each other, Zeus’s “laws” are basically threats because we are not his children and he doesn’t even like his actual children.

you treat a Christian angel badly in disguise and they might smite you. you treat them well and they’ll reward you.

you treat a god in disguise well and they don’t kill you. you treat them badly and they kill you.

you don’t defy the gods, they are literally everywhere and everything. you don’t live under their rules because they have your best interests at heart, you live staying out of their way and making sacrifices and praying to them for your own safety because at the smallest slight, they will literally create plagues, wars, and whole seasons. Odysseus works with Athena but that is because he is the EXCEPTION not the RULE

in Christian scripture, being good and generous is rewarded. In classical mythology you literally don’t have any other choice but to make yourself useful because the gods didn’t care how many humans died in the titanomachy and they won’t care if they kill one more.

Zeus’s law isn’t a decree or a scripture, it’s a lesson you learn the hard way and you pass onto your children. But that’s also because Zeus’s law isn’t even REAL and Greek hospitality can’t be boiled down to one single aspect of their mythology and culture Mr Nolan I’m looking at you when I say this

EDIT: TL;DR is that anglicizing the concept of Xenia reduces it to essentially the most prominent western societal understanding of religion-based “deity in disguise” generosity, which comes from biblical values. My post is just defining the ways that those two instances of “gods in disguise” differ

(additionally) Christopher Nolan’s movie simplifies Xenia into being specifically godly, when it actually extends to a larger custom of political and generational alliances, which Emily Wilson’s translation discusses, but this movie doesn’t 🤗

the entire Odyssey movie I was so confused about the whole Zeus’s law thing like why are we being hyper literal about a cultural custom by oversimplifying it to “oh they might be a god in disguise” (when the origins of Mediterranean hospitality have never been so literal as “I’ll treat you well because you’re maybe Athena”) and saying “well I can do this because Zeus’s law remember” when the entire nature of a long-standing cultural custom is the fact that it is unsaid and expected, not a verbal reminder or a threat

the whole ‘not wearing clothes thing’ bc why is Aaron always bitties out? SENSORY ISSUES. Case closed

his awkward monotone is literally just the neurodivergent cadence. he’s less verbal than other characters and hyper literal when he does talk. It makes sense!

TAIL WAGGING. Obviously all werewolves are hypersensitive to sounds because of their ears so they self regulate through tail wagging! It’s just stimming like flappy hands, spinning, etc but with a tail

Melissa might be autistic too! Which makes total sense with how she treated aphmau in Aphmau’s year because she was just like “weird coping mechanisms? Sure girl no judgement” and it’s just giving neurodivergent veteran wisdom honestly

tell me what else you think is explained through this headcanon! (Because so much of Aaron is overdone for his more ‘angsty bad boy’ love interest character, and it would totally be explained with a neurodivergent lens yk?)
