I think my opinion on parts of the Odyssey movie have 100% evolved in the days since I watched it, but my opinion is still unshaken for the aspect of the movie that introduces the threat of sexual violence from soldiers (via Circe) but then vilifies Circe by refusing to acknowledge Odysseus’s soldiers part in that threat, posing Circe as paranoid woman who traps a ship full of “good men” when she misidentifies them as lustful violent soldiers.

Circe’s character, who in any other context would be a fearless protector, becomes the inopportune hindrance to the crew when you take away important context of the soldier’s true nature. Odysseus essentially says “not all men” are like that, which is a head-scratching revision to a movie that already condemns the greek soldiers for their part in the war. Why are we now getting cold-footed when it’s time to condemn for the full extent of crimes? Whether the soldier’s innocence is true or not is, at the end of the day, irrelevant. That is not the real issue with the movie’s portrayal.

Circe’s use of precautionary witchcraft and wise wisdom cannot function as a cautionary tale in a story that refuses to acknowledge the truth that her character revolves around.

Omg thank goodness people are saying what I was thinking watching the Mermaid Tales finale!!

THE QUALITY WAS SO BAD AT SOME POINTS? Like some scenes were technically impressive ('technically' in the sense that they were impressive mechanics-wise) but it really looked like a cheap water fight that I could do it on Capcut.

also, I know the style for characters is to not have mouths but I could not tell WHO was singing WHEN, and why SO MUCH quiet singing? it went on for too long and became more annoying and confusing than magical.

the dialogue was honestly sometimes really BAD. and the pacing of the dialogue was weird? like I think Catface has the capabilities to have characters react to each other within appropriate times? each scene (especially the 'funny dialogue' ones) were like:

Laurence: *inappropriate joke*

*5 minutes pass*

Aaron: *covers his mouth which has been quiet for FIVE MINUTES* woah buddy you can't say that!

why is there so much lag between multi-character dialogue?

AND the pacing of the whole episode was SO WEIRD. who edited this script? why was there so much filler?

IN SUMMARY: what happened to Aphmau? her dialogue was never perfect but this is a new low! is this what MS7 is going to be? is this the quality we should be expecting?

"Every single one of you, I promise" before going into a portal could mean that The Wolf is (as I've theorized before) a version of aphmau that is going around to parallel universes to save each universe's Aaron

(this could be to protect HER own aaron, or to get aaron back his memories by healing his cursed soul in all universes)

Hello. I know you are a certified Nolan odyssey hater but mostly from a mythology perspective but my biggest gripe with the movie is the dialogue is this just a me thing or do you agree? (Please I feel like I’m losing my mind i expected the movie to be historically inaccurate but at least have good dialogue and nobody’s talking about it)

I totally agree! The dialogue was so weird, and my biggest issue was it became so weirdly meta in a way that really took me out of the story, and not in a fun edgy way. I think my personal opinion is that I don’t mind the modern language if it was good, I didn’t expect the movie to be in ancient Greek. But god, some of the lines were so…off? Like modern but not realistic for anyone in any time period to be saying.

and Odysseus saying “our age of bronze” was just……no

the modern equivalent of the cyclops Polyphemus praying for help from Odysseus and being asked “who is hurting you?” and saying “nobody is hurting me” is like when you read a devastating fic and try to recommend it to someone else and they’re like “who wrote that fic that hurt you so bad” and you have to say some unhinged username like “SkrunklyLesbianPotatoFamine hurt me” like sure they did buddy, that’s not a real name
