A portrait of Gregory Bateson, taken about 1975, when I had no inkling I might one day do this sort of thing for a living. Gregory was a friend, neighbor, and mentor, and had been asked by Stewart Brand for a current portrait to accompany an article he had written for Brand’s Co-Evolution Quarterly. He asked me to take one because he knew I was sort of obsessed with photography (and 67 other things). We used Gregory’s Olympus OM 1, a sweet little camera.

I shot just one roll that included three setups, and there are several pretty good images on it. If I had then the eye to recognize what I had accomplished I might have turned pro many years earlier than I did. What I learned from Gregory about how to think and work and be in the world has been in my core ever since, and that's worth plenty more.
